Estuary-style tacky?

Southend on Sea: I seem to find myself in League 2 cities and towns on Friday morning. Last week it was Plymouth, this week I have a view over the Thames estuary. It reminds me of when branding consultants hired under the previous regime suggested that the club should be re-named 'Estuary' to reflect where most of the support now lives (albeit on the Kent side).

So it turns out that the sex video was a publicity stunt and you can vote on whether it was tasteless or not: Tacky?

I can't imagine that either Roland or Katrien dreamt this one up, but no doubt there will be a piece in the next VOTV by Rick Everitt saying 'it wouldn't have happened in my day.'

I've got a busy day ahead, so won't be able to focus on the match until tomorrow. I am all for showing our respect to Chris Powell when his name his read out and when he comes on to the pitch but not during the game. We are not out of the woods yet and we need three points off Huddersfield.

  1. So long as they haven't damaged the pitch I think it was just a bit of fun & a good PR stunt. Looking forward to being part of a full house cheering on the Addicks tomorrow and hoping we don't see Chris jumping out of the tunnel to celebrate a Huddersfield win!

  2. Seriously, heads must roll over this. We're a family club and there will be hundreds of potential new young fans at The Valley for the first time tomorrow. The content and timing of this stunt were very badly judged and those responsible for this should face the consequences. Scoring at The Valley? Biggest own goal imaginable!

  3. How many season ticket holders will not be there tomorrow making the full house seem rather less I imagine.

Re PR stunt must be getting older its the sort of thing I a 12 year old would think up in the playground.
By the way £4 for a programme that's what I do see as funny

  4. Have we really sunk this low?
As a supposed 'family club' who thought this kind of ‘marketing’ was a good idea and equally alarming who gave it the go ahead?
A public apology is the least the club should issue, but perhaps we will get a public flogging on the pitch which who seem be more fitting the club’s tastes?

  5. get a life, it's just a bit of fun. if people take offence to this and think that their youngsters will be tarnished by this video you really need to get out more.

if your kids are young enough to be tarnished by this video then perhaps you shouldn't be giving them access to the internet to see it?

  6. It’s not about ‘getting a life’ or my kids (who by the way are in their twenties and left home) it’s about the correct image for the club. If you think that simulating sex is correct way to market a family club then perhaps you should stop reading the Daily Star and get a life yourself!

  7. I'm concerned that the anti-fox netting wasn't up, the centre mat wasn't out, and the sprinklers would have added something to the mood...but all credit to them they did remove their shoes to avoid divots !!!

  8. See the pitch is looking fantastic....they would still be in a compromising position on Saturday if they did it on last years pitch !!!!!
    Great pre-match entertainment !!!

  9. Maybe David Sullivan & David Gold might 'borrow' the idea for West Ham ?

  10. OK, apologies for the get a life comment, did not mean to cause offence.

we were marketed as a "family" club but we are no more of a family club than any other team really.

we have a family section in our ground, as do most other clubs.

it's just a bit of harmless fun -which is causing all of this aggravation. I for one couldn't care less, I will support the team on the pitch.

in all honesty that video has had over a million views so has worked.

  12. I’ll accept Pistol Pete’s apology and strongly suggests that he reads ‘pitch hire porn Charlton’s 7 own goals’ blog on Charlton Forever.

  13. It is cheap way of getting publicity for the sake of it. I don't really think this is appropriate or relevant to the 'pitch hire programme', unless the club is planning on hiring the clubs facilities out for swingers' parties.

  14. If the couple who stared in the sex video are going to be at the match tomorrow, i sure hope they dont provide the halftime entertainment, my pacemaker could not take it.

  15. Unfortunately, the club has an embarrassing history around the supposed hilarity around the single entendre “scoring.” I refer you back to the original marketing around Floyds Bar (now Bartrams.)

  16. Spokesman Mr Hassain-Ali said it was just a bit of fun
(How ironic) - no Mr Ali it was disgusting. No decent professional football club would act in this way. And now the couple will be celebrities on Saturday. Are we now a sex club? Interesting to see if Katerine and Roland support this.

  17. So the club now makes a sex video, posts it on the net,;lies by pretending to have no involvement; lies by stating it will carry out an investigation. Then admits its involvement. In any normal business dismissal would follow.

  18. I'm not offended by this at all. I just find it kinda pathetic really.
I mean, what are the chances that after pitching the idea, the genius said "see what i did there? Score? get it?"

  19. I think it is such a pity that so many contributors to Wyn's blog prefer to give us their opinions anonymously.
