Harriott: Jonjo was my inspiration

Callum Harriott has told the Evening Standard that the club's younger players took inspiration from Jonjo Shelvey and Carl Jenkinson in their battle to avoid relegation.

Harriott said: 'I used to watch the Jonjos and Carls coming through and thought "I want to be next. I want to shine." The club's youth set up is great. They push us through and give us as much training as we need and they try and help us. It is a great club for young players.'

Jenkinson: the shock of stepping up from Charlton

Former Addick Carl Jenkinson has been called up to the England squad, a move that partly reflects a more proactive stance by England towards the dual nationality issue. He has already played for Finland at under-17 and under-19 level.

His father works for London Underground refurbishing trains, but was once an athlete, training with Seb Coe and competing in the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. Perhaps that explains where he met his wife he does the payrolls for a firm near the family home in Harlow.

Reflecting on the move from Charlton, Jenkinson told the Evening Standard, 'To go from Charlton, who were then a League 1 club, to a club with a lot of focus on it was a huge shock. I was a bit blown away by the interest from the press. I've gradually adjusted to it with practice but I'd be lying if I said I was a natural.

He has just re-signed for Arsenal until 2018 and is on a £1.8m a year deal, so that should help the adjustment process.

Two ex Charlton players in Anfield duel

Two former Charlton players featured in yesterday's game between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield: Carl Jenkinson and Jonjo Shelvey.

Shelvey came on as a substitute in the 67th minute and, according to The Times 'made a reasonable impact', earning a score of 6. The most surprising news about Shelvey, however, is that he could be about to don the kilt after discovering that his grandmother came from Edinburgh: Shelvey

Jenkinson also got a 6 for his efforts, but is estimated to have won 70 per cent of his defensive duels.

Jenkinson move 'took us by surprise'

Charlton academy supremo Steve Avory claims that the move of Carl Jenkinson to Arsenal took staff by surprise: Jenkinson . In the interview with Radio London he implies that the Finnish international would have benefitted from a year's further development at Charlton, although I am not surprised that he chose to join Arsenal.

I was disappointed to hear that the women's team have lost their centre of excellence status. I think that Morts has done a good job there.

Morts admits that he did not see the decision coming, but no fault attaches to him: Women

Arsenal pay over £1m for Jenkinson

Arsenal have paid over £1m up front for the signature of Charlton's Carl Jenkinson. More here: Jenkinson

Jenkinson said: 'I hope supporters will understand why I can't turn down such an opportunity, but Charlton will always have a place in my heart,' said Jenkinson. 'I will always be in Charlton's debt for the training they have given me since a young age.'

'I'm grateful to the club's academy and all the coaching staff, so I'm delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement.'

Jenkinson has just tweeted to say that he can't describe his happiness at joining his boyhood club and thanks all the Arsenal fans who have welcomed him. If he was going to go to another London club, Arsenal would be my preferred choice. He may sink or swim there, but it is an opportunity that he cannot turn down.

Carl has been trending on Twitter, but mostly on a 'Who?' basis.

Farewell then, Carl Jenkinson

According to the official site Carl Jenkinson has turned down a new and improved contract with the Addicks (Chris Solly has signed a two year deal).

He was not in the squad last night and I understand that he will not play for the club again. Of his suitors, he may prefer the Gooners over Manchester United as he is an Arsenal fan.

Stuff happens.

Fergie in for Jenkinson

Sir Alex Ferguson has had Carl Jenkinson watched for two years and is expected to make a move for him in the summer. The 19-year old will then have a choice of staying in London with Arsenal or heading north to join Newton Heath.

Although he had an off day yesterday, he has been one of the few bright spots in Charlton's recent performances. He is out of contract in the summer so there will be no financial gain for Charlton.

Gooners in for Jenkinson

Arsenal are tracking Carl Jenkinson and are thinking of making a move for him in the summer according to various media sources.

Jenkinson has impressed the Addickted since he earned a regular team place.

In another development, former Charlton keeper Darren Randolph has been called up for the Republic of Ireland squad.

Same old Charlton!

Nearly 25,000 people were recorded as having turned up at The Valley today. Those who had been away for a while would have seen the same old Charlton: a midfield lacking in creativity and unable impose themselves on the game and a defence prone to match losing errors. When we were 0-0 the Bloke Beside Me said that sooner or later the defence would make an error and so they did, or rather three of them. All that Bradley Wright-Phillips could do was score a consolation goal as the Addicks went down 1-3 to the Grecians.

Bradley Wright-Phillips drew an early save from the Exeter keeper. Duffy had to be withdrawn by Exeter on 10 minutes and there was a delay while Sercombe found his shin pads. Eccleston was looking lively and Johnnie Jackson won the Addicks a corner. Dailly defended well.

Eccleston advanced but the ball was cleared off the line for a Charlton corner, followed by a second. Good work by Abbott won Charlton a corner. In the four minutes added on, a good run by Fry won the Addicks a corner. Bradley Wright-Phillips got a yellow card for dissent after an Exeter free kick.

Exeter had never really threatened during the first half and we had had only one real chance.

Half time: Addicks 0, Grecians 0

Charlton opened the half with another corner, but once again it was unproductive. Tully got a yellow card for obstruction. Exeter won a corner which was taken short followed by a second. The game entered a phase of very open, end-to-end play. Carl Jenkinson won a corner for Charlton. Wright-Phillips made an attempt on goal. Johnnie Jackson caught sight of goal and put in an effot that was only just wide.

Exeter won a couple of corners in succession. Elliot pushed the ball out with both hands. On 63 minutes the unmarked Sercombe ran on to a good pass from Harley and the substitute blasted the ball into the back of the net.

Elliot had a tip an Exeter free kick round the post. McCormack was taken off and replaced by Racon. Doherty put in a weak back pass to Elliot and O'Flynn was able to slot the ball in an empty net. After O'Flynn was brought down by Elliot, the referee pointed to the spot and Tully converted.

Following a Charlton corner, the ball came back off the bar and Wright-Phillips showed no hesitation in finding the back of the net to score the consolation.

Match analysis

Ivy the Terrible has awarded the Silver Bone to Carl Jenkinson on his Valley debut. It wasn't a perfect performance: there was some naivety and at least one poor cross, but he snuffed out the Grecians in the first half and got forward well in the second. Elliot did not come out quickly enough for the second goal and gave away a penalty for the third. Dailly was solid enough for much of the match, but one wonders if he tires. Doherty had a good game with some excellent defensive headers until the howler that led to the second goal. Fry was energetic and pushed forward well, but all too often he cannot complete a simple pass. McCormack had a poor game from one or two flurries forward. Jackson was one of the better players and had one decent attempt on goal. Semedo provided some nice moves.
Eccleston had his moments, but too often he was left to do too much on his own, he needed more support. Abbott did his best and he was often being held back, but his ball control with his feet is often not good.
Wright-Phillips showed once again that he has an eye for goal.
Racon was an improvement on McCormack, he got forward well and provided some good passes, something often lacking in the side. Reid tried to get involved, but didn't have a great impact. Wagstaff came on too late to have any chance of making a real difference.

Hiss of the Match This goes to 'Day Glo' man, Exeter goalkeeper Ben Hamer for being visually offensive. Having worn a pink outfit in the first half, he decided to model an even more revolting lime green number in the second.
