Being let go by Charlton was lowest point says McGleish

At 40 years old Scott McGleish is still playing football for Wealdstone in the Conference South, close to his original club at Edgware. Aged 20, he left there to take a year's contract at Charlton. Being let go by the Addicks was the lowest point in his career, he has told today's Football League Paper.

He went on to play for a series of lower division Football League teams, most recently for Leyton Orient. He scored the winning goal for them against us on 25 January 2010. He could be said to have found his level.

McGleish said of his release by Charlton, 'I'd given up everything to go pro and I felt I deserved another year's contract. I'd finished the season as the reserves top goal scorer. When I came out of that meeting with Steve Grit and Alan Curbishley, I felt that everything had gone. Luckily Keith Peacock pulled me to one side and said, "Don't worry, I've had lots of phone calls from clubs, you will be ok."'

As far as the first team was concerned, I recall him as a player who came on as a late substitute.

Scott McGleish?

What follows is a question not a recommendation. Scott McGleish has been let go by Leyton Orient. He is 37, but he still seems to have an eye for goal. He is still full of enthusiasm about playing (a quality that often seems to be in rare supply).

At the moment he seems to be looking for a League 2 or a Conference club. Indeed, he or his agent placed a story in The Non-League Paper yesterday which was effectively a plea to 'give us a job'.

But could he do a job for us? What I have in mind is a bench player who could come on in the 75th minute and perhaps make a difference. He wouldn't cost a lot.

The counter argument is that we should be looking to the future. And for McGleish it might be a reprise of his short earlier stay at The Valley when he was used as a last minute substitute. However, there are those who think he didn't get a fair chance then.

No Dicko, but McGleish

Vaasa: As the Addickted look forward to tomorrow's clash at Orient with heightened expectations, it is perhaps worth reminding ourselves that former Charlton commercial manager and Valley Party candidate Steve Dixon went on to a job at Brisbane Road. However, 'Dicko' doesn't seem to be there any more.

Scott McGleish is and I remember him being routinely used (well, six times) as an end-of-game substitution at The Valley in the 1994/5 season. He went on to a long career at lower division clubs and could be our nemesis tomorrow.

Leamington went down to a 3-1 defeat at Farnborough on Saturday in front of a crowd of 1,009. No disgrace there, but they need to get some points on the board against Evesham United at Harbury Lane tomorrow.

VPS Vaasa lost 0-2 at home last night to TPS Turku who I think are a good side, but the video clip of the game was not impressive.
