Pards swoops for Elliot

Newcastle United are expected to sign Charlton goalkeeper with Rob Elliot in the next day or two. He would be a replacement for Fraser Forster who has rejoined Celtic on loan with a view to a £2m transfer.

Elliot was recommended to Pardew by Andy Woodman, the goalkeeping coach, who worked with the player at Sparrows Lane.

Elliot has had a good start to the season, conceding only one goal. Doubts have been expressed in the past about how well he commands his area and how good he is with crosses, but I am far from sure that his departure is good news.

Saw Elliott at a meet the fans evening a few years ago, really nice lad, Charlton supporter through and through, if he is off I would wish him well. I think premiership may be a tad early for him as still learning his craft and another season at CAFC may have provided that, but with a year on his contract and two other keepers recently brought in I would completely understand him taking this chance for premiership football.

I have witnessed Rob Elliott between the sticks on numerous occasions for Charlton, not least on New Year's Day at Colchester in a 3-3 draw, when his own fans chanted for him to be subbed after 30 minutes of the game. He was truly atrocious that day. Watch whenever he concedes a goal - it's always someone else's fault but, in truth, he flaps at crosses and corners and generally doesn't inspire his defenders. He is a good shot stopper though and has had the odd v good game. Although I wish him well for the future if he does go to Newcastle, he is not as good as Forster, in my opinion, and I won't shed any tears over his departure. Any successful team needs a consistently good performing goalkeeper but sadly Robbie is a far cry from that!

I agree with Sarf. He's frustrating because sometimes he looks brilliant and he can make excellent saves but he does make too many errors. He's yung though and he strikes me as a keeper with presence. I can see potential for him to be a very good keeper but he's very much a work in progress and he has cost us points in the past. Difficult one but if Powell has faith in Sullivan then its probably worth cashing in.

In the last few dark years of Charlton's history, he was one if the few players who cared about the club and the fans. I wish him all the best for the future.

I was at the Colchester game and saw him pull off one of the best saves I have ever seen from a charlton keeper, from a free kick.

The fans were calling for him to be subbed as he had picked up two injuries. That he carried on whilst struggling with those injuries says much about his character, although some may criticise that as a risky approach. During the warm up before the game it was evident from the banter that he is idolised by many younger fans who make the noise.Once the fans at the Colchester game realised he was carrying off his injury they were more than happy to see him continue.

As for blaming others when goals go in, it is a regularly used approach by many keepers to keep their sanity intact. If you keep taking the blame every time one goes in you'd soon give up.

That he is a Charlton fan, and given his obvious delight whenever we win, fan adoration is understandable.

For me he could have gone on to be one of the best Charlton keepers in my lifetime, and I will sorely miss him.

Very best wishes Robbie

At Plymouth whwn he came on for his debut after Weaver was sent off he had a memorable game, especially for pone of hius years.
It's been a diffiult act to follow. He has had his highs and lows especially as a shot stopper but he continues to look less than deamnding in the air and his handling has let him down periodically, presewnting the oppostion with a gift when he has failed to hold on to the ball.
However, a good loyal servant and fan so I hope he does well at Newcastle if he goes (for his benefit and NOT "Super" Alan Pardew.
