Will interest in Pigott revive?

Charlton were interested in Joe Pigott in the January transfer window, but the then salary cap got in the way.  Could their interest in the former Addick be revived?  https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/afc-wimbledon-chief-not-resigned-to-joe-pigotts-exit-this-summer/

An approach is more likely if we don't get promoted.

Valete, Joe Pigott

Joe Pigott has been signed by Cambridge United on a one year deal following his release by Charlton: Pigott

In all honesty, he has probably found his level. Thanks for all you tried to do.

Charlton retained the Crown Berger Cup with a 4-1 win over Welling United at Park View Road. Full report tomorrow.

New loan deal for Pigott

A number of League 2 clubs including Luton Town, Bristol Rovers and Stevenage are interested in taking Joe Pigott on loan for the second half of the season. He spent the first half of the season at Southend United: Loan deals

Appearances in the first team showed that Pigott was not up to Championship standard and he seems to have found his level in League Two.

Shrimpers want to hang on to Pigott

Southend United want to hang on to Joe Pigott even though he has been left out of the side in recent weeks. He is without a goal in his last eight league appearances. However, manager Phil Brown thinks that he definitely has a bright future ahead of him: 'He is a young player still learning the game, but he is capable of scoring goals.'

His loan expires in four weeks, but there is a clause to make the deal permanent or extend it until the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Callum Harriott scored two good goals for Colchester in their 3-2 cup victory over Altrincham.

Bournemouth's victory at Chelsea was the first win by a promoted side there since Charlton in 2001.

Kinsella Junior scores for Walsall

Liam Kinsella scored the opening and his debut goal for Walsall today in their 2-0 victory over Burton Albion, the other goal coming from a late penalty. According to reports, Kinsella was also 'brilliant' in defence, making one crucial block. Burton are, of course, now managed by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who, when he was at Charlton, was said to have the turning circle of an oil tanker.

The 19-year old was born in Colchester: Career details

Kinsella senior did, of course, play for Walsall, but also scored twice for Charlton in a 4-2 victory over the Saddlers: Win at Walsall

Elsewhere, Joe Pigott scored the only goal in Southend's win and Lennon scored for Gillingham in their 3-1 victory at Chesterfield.

Deal done on Bergdich

According to a tweet by Richard Cawley of the South London Press, Charlton have concluded a transfer deal with Real Vallodold over Zag Bergdich. It will be a long-term contract.

On James Henry, Cawley says that Wolves want more than £500,000 even though his contract has just twelve months to run.

Cawley has also tweeted that Southend have made a bid for Joe Pigott, but it doesn't meet Charlton's valuation.

Cristian Cabellos has signed. He was with Barcelona and then moved on to the Spurs development squad, before a loan spell in Portugal. A midfielder, he can also play at centre forward: Cabellos

Southend maintain interest in Pigott

Southend have maintained their interest in luring Joe Pigott back to Roots Hall. However, matters have been held up because Guy Luzon had never seen him play and wanted to take a look pre-season: Joe Pigott

My view is that Pigott is not going to make the grade in the Championship and would be better off with the Shrimpers.

Four players on their way

According to the usually well informed Richard Cawley of the SLP, Charlton are looking to offload the following players: Rhoys Wiggins; Joe Pigott; Callum Harriott; and Andre Bikey. Pigott is not a surprise, as he is probably League 1 level at best and may be able to find a berth at Southend. Bikey has been out of favour for some time. The mercurial Harriott has been in and out of the team. Wiggins is arguably the most surprising, but has been injury prone.

Voice of the Valley editor Rick Everitt has commented, 'What Richard Cawley’s tweet amounts to is that these players are available for transfer and they can leave if someone else wants to take over their contracts, whether with or without a fee. They have not been released (and can’t be without a pay-off) and the club remains liable for the remainder of their contract.'

Cawley also says that we are interested in Rotherham midfielder Ben Pringle whom he reckons is a good player. However, Fulham seem to be favourites to secure his signature. Bolton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Leeds United are also said to be interested in the player who started his career at Ilkeston Town: Ben Pringle

The Chicago Addick has a well sourced story that we are to sign Lokeren winger Nill de Pauw (Lokeren is the new club of Bob Peeters): Nill de Pauw

Congratulations to Joe Pigott

The Charlton loan player scored a late equaliser for Southend in yesterday's play off final against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley yesterday, a nicely taken goal. He then went on to score the first penalty.

Quite a few Shrimpers fans had already left when he scored!

One question that arises is whether Pigott will now see his future in League One with Southend.

Shrimpers boss wants Pigott to stay

Southend boss Phil Brown wants Joe Pigott to stay at the club until the end of the season after he scored two goals in three games. He is currently on a 28 day loan: Pigott

Pigott has his admirers at The Valley and he has shown before he can perform against League 2 defences. For his development it would probably be best to let him stay at Roots Hall. In a worst case scenario he might be required at The Valley at League 1 level next season!

Pigott to return

Joe Pigott is to return from Newport County when his loan spell ends. He has scored three goals for the League 2 club, but they cannot afford to keep him: Pigott

Another spell at a lower league club might benefit his development.

We have a new version of the curse of Charlton with the sacking of charm merchant Uwe Rosler at Wigan. Normally managers get the sack after the humiliation of being beaten by the Addicks, but Rosler went after Wigan's home game with Charlton was moved to a Friday because of the needs of egg chasing.

Rosler will be remembered for his confrontation with Bob Peeters.

Great victory at Leeds

Leeds commentators praised his 'suave' suit, but later it was in some disarray. 'We wanted it more,' said the coach.

A penalty save in time added on by Ben Hamer and a stunning goal by the Gooch saw Charlton win 1-0 at Elland Road tonight to move three points clear of Barnsley.

The Addicks started with Pigott as the striker up front in a 4-1-4-1, a formation that attracted some criticism (he was replaced by Obika in the second half). The first half was fairly even, although Leeds had the better chances. In the last five to ten minutes Charlton started to dominate and piled on the pressure.

In the second half Hamer made a key save by tipping the ball on to the crossbar. Then Reza beat two defenders and the keeper with a curling shot into the right of the net. McCormack spooned the ball over the net for Leeds under pressure from Morrison.

Poyet was at the heart of the play but was subject to a lot of fouls, having his hair pulled on one occasion. A tiring Astrit was replaced by Harriott. A free kick fed to Dervitte, who had been stalwart in defence, saw him put in a fierce shot which Butland did well to palm away for a corner.

Leeds started to apply more pressure in the closing minutes. Five minutes were added on and a long ball unsettled the back four, Poyet being judged to have committed a foul with a push in the box. Hamer dived to the right to deny McCormack.

Pigott recalled

Joe Pigott has been recalled from Gillingham ahead of Charlton's trip to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday: Pigott. Looks like a somewhat desperate measure.

Following their 5-0 drubbing by Derby, Forest are expected to announce the departure of Billy Davies (the hoped for replacement for Curbs) and the arrival of Neil Warnock from his Cornish smallholding. In the event Warnock decided not to accept the poisoned chalice with this report referring to 'strange goings on' at the club: Forest

Parzysek to sign

As I have tried to suggest in earlier postings, one should judge the transfer window when it was over. All the indications were that signings were in prospect and Sky Sports News has announced that the Addicks are signing 20-year old Polish striker Pitor Parzysek. He is currently with Dutch club De Graafschap where he has scored 23 goals in 42 appearances in the Eerste (2nd divison). The club have confirmed the signing on their website: Pitor . He is now listed as a Charlton player on Wikipedia.

He will be on a four-and-a-half year contract, so no half measures there. At 6ft 3 inches he sounds like a Yann replacement. He will have a medical tomorrow and may be available for Wigan.

As someone remarked, it's going to be tough for Big Dave Lockwood announcing the Charlton team from now on as the squad becomes more cosmopolitan.

Chris Powell has tweeted from the press conference, 'I want the fans to know we are battling hard and doing the best we can. We need their support.' That does not sound like someone about to walk.

Bradley Pritchard and Jordan Cook are to go out on loan. Joe Pigott may go on loan to League 1.

'Gucci' has now signed on a permanent deal, but he has not played for several months and is not match fit.

According to tweets from Richard Cawley, the deal for Dale Stephens to go to Brighton has been concluded. On Stephens, Chris Powell said, 'Brighton have made a number of offers and Dale has expressed his right to speak to them if the club agreed a deal - which the club has. Obviously I would like Dale to stay. Everyone has seen this season that he has been playing at the level we always thought he could. There's still a lot more to come from him. He has got all the attributes to be a top player in the Premier League.'

However, Rhoys Wiggins has signed a four-and-a-half year contract and is staying.

The Daily Mail has published a highly speculative piece saying that SCP and RD do not see 'eye to eye' on a number of issues. Although short of substance, it may not be wide of the mark: Powell

Kermorgant could return - but doesn't

Yann Kermorgant may have recovered sufficiently from an ankle injury to play in tomorrow's derby against Millwall at The Valley. Unfortunately, he didn't and Pigott takes his place. Chris Solly remains a doubt after missing the last four games with a knee injury and isn't in the line up and fellow defender Leon Cort is also carrying a knock. Cameron Stewart is pushing to make his full debut after the on-loan Hull winger scored the Addicks' goal on Tuesday night on his first appearance as a substitute. However, he remains on the bench, perhaps just as well given his record in seeing off managers discussed in the Daily Mirror today.

Andy d'Urso, the banker from Billericay, is the referee which is not good news for either side. How he is allowed to referee such a crucial match defies belief. It will be no surprise if there is an errant red card.

Charlton have failed to score in their last three league games against Millwall, since the clubs shared eight League One goals at the Valley in December 2009. Millwall have won twice as many away league games against Charlton than they have lost (W14, D12, L7). It's 17 years since Charlton last beat their rivals: 2-0 at home in the second tier in March 1996.

On-loan Leeds striker Steve Morison could start for Millwall after scoring in their 3-1 win over Blackpool. Otherwise, Steve Lomas is likely to stick with the side which secured a first league victory of the season.

Former Addick Nicky Bailey did not distinguish himself in last weekend's 1-5 home defeat by Derby. He was apparently completely outplayed by Hughes and Bryson who 'waltzed around him at will' according to the Football League Paper. Bailey at least got a score of 4, but Martyn Woolford and Shaun Derry got unusually low scores of 3. Of Derry they said, 'With his greying hair, the 35-year old was a relic among the youthful buzz of Derby's midfield.'

Lomas has brought in 23-year old Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn on a three month loan. The former England under-21 international had last season disrupted by an appendix problem and found it difficult to recover his form.

Odds (Coral) are: Charlton 11/10; Draw, 12/5; Millwall, 12/5.

Cameron Stewart in on loan

In a late deal in the transfer window the Addicks have signed Cameron Stewart on loan from Hull City: Stewart

Celtic had been chasing the 22-year old and it was thought that he might join them as he has family north of the border, although he was born in Manchester. He has chosen to represent England rather than Scotland in international youth football. There were also reports that Blackpool were interested in him.

He was originally with Manchester United, but since he joined the Tigers his opportunities for first team football have been limited by injury. Although he is a winger, he can also play as a striker: Cameron Stewart

I had been given to understand that Chris Solly signed a four year contract on Saturday which would increase his value should he be sold, but fortunately he has not been in this transfer window. The announcement has been made today (Thursday). There was also interest in Rhoys Wiggins which may have unsettled him. But it is pleasing that the squad remains intact.

Danny Green has joined MK Dons on a one month loan.

Joe Pigott has signed a three year deal which I think is a very sensible move and will be welcomed by fans.

We can concentrate on the league

We can concentrate on the league after last night's 3-2 league cup defeat at Huddersfield. And it's only August. There is, of course, the FA Cup which is the more significant competition, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

The real concern is that our leaky defence has conceded three more goals, with Hamer thought to be at fault for one of them. Apparently, for the first Town goal a long short rolled under his near post dive. He did, however, deny the home side a fourth with a good save in stoppage time.

Adam Hammill's late goal put Huddersfield into the third round of the Capital One Cup for the first time in 10 years. Dale Stephens, enjoying the northern air, put Charlton ahead with a free-kick. Huddersfield were hardly in it for the first half-hour and it took a soft opening goal from Stephens to wake them up. Huddersfield's Oliver Norwood fouled Evina on the left edge of the box on 32 minutes and Stephens struck the resulting free-kick.It was hit low, went through the wall and then a crowd of players around the six-yard area before creeping in at the far post.

Joel Lynch equalised from Oliver Norwood's pass. Marvin Sordell put Charlton back in front with his first Addicks goal to overcome the nickname 'sodall'. Sordell swept the ball in from close range after 59 minutes after Joe Piggott nodded down Cedric Evina's cross. Sordell was arguably lucky to be still on the field having only been booked for a bad lunge on Town skipper Peter Clarke minutes earlier. Jonathan Hogg netted for the hosts from 25 yards with a deflected shot, his first goal for the club. Hammill slammed in the winner when the ball fell kindly when James Vaughan jostled for Jon Stead's through ball.

One fan has tried to draw up a list of positives:

  • 1.We appeared to be the better side, especially in the first half, creating numerous chances.
  • 2. Piggott was certainly involved and it sounds like he had a good game.
  • 3. Pritchard played well
  • 4. Good run outs for the squad players, especially Wilson, Evina and Wood
  • 5. We scored 2 goals!

Attendance was 6,150. The 159 Charlton fans who went deserve a medal.

Piggott's delight

Joe Piggott talks about his delight in scoring for Charlton in his debut first team match at The Valley: Piggott

Convincing cup win for Addicks

The Charlton side for this evening’s league cup match against Oxford United was entirely changed from the one that started against Bournemouth apart from Hamer in goal. 4,935 were in attendance, nearly 800 from Oxford.

Danny Green took the first corner of the evening for Charlton, but it was punched away. Piggott put in a good long-range ball finding Church. Richard Wood had to deal with an Oxford attack. Evina and Cook combined well on the left, but they suffered from a tight offside decision. Oxford won a corner. The referee blew for a free kick.

Simon Church scored his first goal for the Addicks on 18 minutes to take the lead against Oxford. A Green effort from distance went over the bar. Oxford made a good run down the right and Hamer had to make the save. An effort from Fulham loan player Williams went wide. A free kick from Green went over the crossbar.

A good run from Cook set up a corner for Charlton, but Wood was unable to score from six yards out with Oxford defenders in his way.

HT: 1-0

Hollands headed the ball just over. Green took a free kick for Charlton through the wall to make it 2-0. Oxford won a corner which was taken short. Piggott did all the hard work, there was an open goal, but Church put it wide from six yards out. Church made no mistake when he got the opportunity to make it 3-0. Cort won Charlton a corner, but it was punched away. Oxford made two attacking substitutions.

Hamer made a good save off Williams. Cort did enough to block Potter at the expense of a corner. Cort stayed down, but may have been winded and got up. Church was taken off and replaced by Sordell. Cook received a yellow card for a foul on Hunt. Hamer punched away the free kick and fell awkwardly, hurting his right shoulder. Cook went down and needed some treatment. Cook was replaced by Harriott.

The Oxford fans claimed that Wood had used his hand and an Oxford player received a yellow card for dissent. The referee gave Hollands a yellow card for sliding in.

Sordell tried to make it 4-0, but it went wide after a deflection. The ball almost went in from the corner.

Five minutes were added on. Another Oxford player got a yellow for dissent. A Charlton corner was punched away, but the referee blew up anyway. Charlton were given a penalty. Piggott put it in the back of the net. Charlton were in the draw for the second round.

Pre-season progress continues

Pre-season results ultimately don't mean that much given the nature of the opposition, but it is still heartening and good for morale to see results like the 3-0 away win at Portsmouth yesterday.

The development squad are also doing well, winning 3-1 at Thurrock. After a tight first 30 minutes, Thurrock took the lead. Jack Munns and Adebayo Azeez were unable to take advantage of chances to equalise before half time.

In the first five minutes of the second half, the Addicks scored twice. First, Oliver Muldoon scored a 20-yard thunderbolt and then Joe Pigott slotted home after a bad back pass. On the hour the Thurrock keeper saved well from Morgan Foxx. Harry Gerrard then scored a penalty after a handball.
