Gray for Palace?

According to Pravda Palace boss Neil Warnock is keeping an eye on Andy Gray with a view to adding him to his squad. You know it makes sense: Charlton get relegated, Palace want to return to their 'rightful' place in the Premiership, so sign up as many Charlton players as you can.

We really do need to offload Gray. I was shocked last season when I was told by a reliable source last season what his salary is. We can't afford him and he has never contributed much anyway.

Let's hope they take him...

I did note a report a couple of weeks ago, where Warnock said he couldn't afford his terms though...

Pardew's replacement of Iwelumo with Gray was one of his very worst transfer decisions, not only in terms of weakening the squad but also financially and was a classic example of the desperation and inconsistency in Pardew's management.

I remember at the time Pardew saying "I just felt we just needed something a little bit different" one of his catch all phrases usually translated to "I'm going to do something short-sighted and calamitous"

He then went on to massively talk up Luke Varney in a way that probably didn't end up helping his confidence and left us with a policy of serial loan striker cast-offs which has continued to this day.

For all of that Gray is currently the best striker we have at the club. I won't be sad to see him go but I really hope Parkinson can break with the Pardewism in his heart and use his brain by getting a decent strike force and sticking with it. For all of the short-comings of the Iwelumo-Varney partnership is was massively preferable to what we ended up with, consistency is beneficial to the whole team and its no coincidence that any successful team you'd care to mention used a significantly lower number of players than we did.

It's clear we haven't seen the best from Gray. Poor bloke had more than enough on his plate last season away from football. I think he's the best striker we have at the club, although that's not saying a lot. On the grounds that we're hardly likely to be in the market for a proven goalscorer then there's a strong argument for hanging on to him in the hope that he can fire the goals we need for a decent season. Palace can't afford his wages but our need to cut the pay bill might be a bigger issue.
