Surreal move for Davison from Enfield to Charlton

An extensive interview with Josh Davison in which he talks about he nearly played for a team in Latvia and had a trial with the Spanners: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/he-was-quite-rough-with-me-josh-davison-admits-approach-helped-develop-his-hold-up-play-at-charlton-athletic/

Coming from playing at 300 or 400 to being on the bench at Bristol City was quite surreal.   Lee Bowyer was tough with him and helped him to develop his hold up play, while Darren Pratley helped him settle in.

Nigel squares up to the Nigels

Charlton drew 2-2 at Crystal Palace at Selhurst this evening, twice coming back after going behind with goals from Stockley and Davison.

Ryan Inniss was rested again with commentator Jake Forster-Caskey noting he was wrapped in cotton wool.

Charlton started brightly.  DJ supplied Washington and the keeper had to come out.  Stockley was denied by a block by the centre half.  A header was cleared from under the bar for a Charlton corner.

On 14 minutes a defensive mix up meant that MacGillivray was unable to clear and Palace went ahead to the delight of the rather thin ranks of the assembled Nigels .

Morgan turned provider for Washington but his effort was saved.  Washington tried to turn provider for Stockley, but the effort was blocked.

On 37 minutes a Morgan corner was turned in by Stockley using his feet to make it 1-1.

Forster-Caskey noted that we could have played through the midfield more and we were going forward slightly too early.

HT: 1-1

Charlton made eight changes at the break and made a good start to the half.  Pearce put in a good ball but Stockley was off target.  A Vennings free kick was punched away.

MacGillivray made a great initial save.  The ball ended up in the net, but was ruled offside to the annoyance of the ultras behind the goal.

There was excellent last ditch defending by Barker as Palace threatened an empty net.  A poor clearance by MacGillivray set up an opportunity for Palace and Banks scored to make it 2-1.

Vennings fed Davison, who had replaced Stockley, but his header was saved.   On 78 minutes a breakaway powered by Ghandour saw an outstanding finish by Davison to make it 2-2.

It was a fluent and confident display by Charlton.

No loan out for Davison

Josh Davison will not be loaned out this season, but will be back in the first team squad.   He has impressed Nigel Adkins in terms of leading the line: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/young-striker-set-to-be-part-of-charltons-first-team-plans-next-season-after-impressing-boss-nigel-adkins/

Charlton win at the Costa del Dartford

Charlton beat Dartford 2-1 at a hot Princes Park this afternoon with goals from DJ and Josh Davison.  The second half was more entertaining than the first.

Nigel Adkins was absent having been pinged and Johnnie Jackson took over from him.

Dartford looked fluent and were not a team of strangers like Welling.   On eight minutes following good work on their right Roberts drew a great save from Havers who cleared on to the inside of the post.

On 12 minutes an Albie Morgan effort was tipped over the bar by keeper King.  On 19 minutes Washington advanced down the left and put in a shot.  Stockley hoped for a tap in, but Dartford were able to defend for a Charlton corner.

On 44 minutes DJ was just wide from a cross from Matthews.

Morgan and Washington played well together.   The quality of crosses was often lacking and there were too many over hit balls.

Player of the half: Albie Morgan who put in some great runs.   Elerewe attracted some favourable comments online.

HT: 0--0

Pearce came on for Famewo and Barker for Matthews.

On 49 minutes DJ made use of a long ball, got past his man and provided a calm, composed finish to make it 0-1.  He was hobbling a bit afterwards.

Charlton never find it easy to hold on to a lead and within two minutes Graham had made it 1-1 with a powerful shot.   On 55 minutes Barker put in a shot that led to a Charlton corner.

On 60 minutes Charlton made wholesale changes replacing everyone except the half time substitutes.

A Clayden shot on 63 minutes produced a Charlton corner (needless to say, all unproductive).  Then on 65 minutes Davison powered a great shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-2.

Graham threatened again and Barker did well.  Charlton fan James Beadle made a great save.  Pearce put in a great challenge on former Addick Aziz.

There was a call for a penalty after a Barker challenge but Dartford just got a corner.  On 87 minutes the home side got a free kick just outside the penalty area but it came off the wall.   Aziz got the ball in the net, but it was ruled offside.

Player of the half: Jason Pearce, in the right place at the right time even if he was rebuked by the referee for taking things too seriously.

Davison is star man

The Football League Paper has named Charlton loan player Josh Davison as star man in yesterday's 2-1 victory for Forest Green Rovers over Tranmere Rovers.

Davison put the Vegans ahead on 50 minutes when 'Davison found a sumptuous finish.'  It certainly looked like an excellent angled strike from distance on The Football League Show.

Interim Forest Green coach Jonny Ball said: 'It was great composure for Josh Davison's goal.  I'm really pleased for him, he deserved it.'

Morgan on his way, and perhaps Davison

With the Charlton midfield well stocked, Albie Morgan is going to be loaned out again to the National League to get some game time. Sagacious supremo Lee Bowyer reckons that it offers better experience than the under 23s. Morgan was formerly at Ebbsfleet: Need for first team experience

Some fans thought he should be going to League One or Two, but the window has closed. Richard Cawley tweeted, 'Think behind scenes there is a feeling he needs to work on his fitness.'

The striker situation is still being evaluated. Josh Davison has done well, but might also need more regular game time, probably in the National League.

That'll do

Charlton held table topping West Bromwich Albion to a 2-2 draw at The Valley yesterday. It was an exciting, competitive match in front of an up for it crowd, although the increasing petulance of the Baggies players earned them a succession of yellow cards, six in total. The match was the lead on Quest's EFL show last night.

Satisfied supremo Lee Bowyer praised the character shown by Charlton: Boywer hails Charlton's character

The Bangkok Addick tweeted: 'Very impressed with the battling performance against a technically superior team with several players who were in the Premier League last year.'

Paul from Bexleyheath made the game on crutches after his recent operation. Erstwhile Goodbye Horse fanzine editor and former black cab driver Kevin Portch made it to the Real Ale House in East Greenwich before the game.

Charlton fans were heartened by the return of Jonny Williams, who displayed his usual commitment, and Jake Forster-Caskey. It was a first ever senior level goal for Josh Davison, a non-league recruit from Enfield Town in the summer, and a first Addicks goal for Tom Lockyer. If this goes down in the stats as own goal, it will be nonsense: Lee Boywer says so

The game mirrored October's similarly-entertaining affair at The Hawthorns when Charlton also twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw. While the first half was fairly even, Albion will rue not making the most of their superiority after Robson-Kanu put them ahead for a second time less than a minute into the second half. This was frustrating and was really the consequence of a rather tentative start to the half by the Addicks.

That goal had an element of fortune, the Wales striker's instinctive flick from a Matt Phillips cross taking a nick off Naby Sarr. Zohore, who netted the winner in Sunday's FA Cup game, had earlier won the ball before firing home at the second attempt to break the deadlock. Oshilaja made an initial block, but was unable to prevent a repeat effort. The Albion move had started when Matthews gave the ball away.

But Davison, a summer arrival from non-league Enfield, headed the Addicks level from close range after Sarr nodded back a deep corner. The Baggies fans held on to the ball before the corner, much good that it did them, but they continued with similar silly behaviour throughout the match. I also think that the EFL should fine the Baggies for having an away kit in bad taste. More seriously, it was actually quite difficult to see the player numbers.

Sarr made a crucial and very skilled tackle to prevent Albion taking the lead again.

The Covered End delivered a chant of 'There's only one Matt Southall' in the first half but leading moaner Desmond from Deal was not impressed: 'Mark my words! The wheels are coming off and it's all going pear shaped. Duchatelet will build houses on the training ground before we buy it.'

Charlton have won just once in 15 Championship matches, taking eight points from a possible 45, but the draw keeps them 19th, five points above the relegation zone.

The attendance was a little disappointing at 19,720, but reminds us that there is work that needs to be done to attract back former fans.

Lee Bowyer hopes to sign his new contract on Monday.

Line up for Swansea

Youngsters Josh Davison and Ben Dempsey make their Championship debuts at Swansea tonight, while Lyle Taylor starts: Louis Mendez reports from the Liberty Stadium

Swansea fans appear to be in a discontented mood at the moment with the boo boys in evidence at the last home game, a drab 0-0 draw with Barnsley, although arguably they don't have that much to complain about: Just plain frustration

Wales Online has commented ahead of tonight's game: 'A win over a Charlton side that has won just one of their last 10 outings on the road, would be enough to take Swansea back into the top six, and would also go a long way to remedying the murmurs of discontent on the terraces.'

The Swansea chairman commented: 'we all must stick together and encourage this young team to give them the confidence as they develop under Steve Cooper and his coaching staff.' The earlier than expected recall of striker Sam Surridge to Bournemouth appears to have hit morale.

Charlton are making only their second visit to Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium, having drawn 1-1 there in February 2009, when Nathan Dyer scored his first league goal for Swansea. Swansea have not lost their first league game of a new decade since 1960, when they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa.
