The morning after the night before

A certain gloom seems to pervade some blogs and E mail comments this morning. However, you can never read results off the table in any division and particularly in this one where the spread of points is lower than in any other division. It was also a night for goalless draws in the Championship.

I have thought for some time that an automatic promotion place was beyond our grasp, but I remain confident of a play off place, although hopefully not from 5th position which could find us playing our first match away to someone like Stoke.

We have been rebuilding the team and we now have a number of younger exciting players who promise well for the future. If we don't go up, next year we will have less of other teams perceiving us as a Premiership team against whom they have to put on their best performances.

And Crystal Palace are now 10th ...

I agree with everything you say.

In development terms the side is clearly not ready for the Premiership.

The key issue has to be financial. Can we afford not to go up?

We have been like a mis-firing engine on occassion various parts of the team playing well and others poorly. By all accounts Paddy and Nicky Weaver had excellent games. We miss a creative midfielder who can open up defences. I don't think Andy Reid was the answer.

It is hard not to feel a little deflated this morning (although by Saturday I'm sure we'll all be back up for it). After the joy of Friday night came results on Saturday that went against us, followed by more of the same last night: Bristol City winning where we lost, Watford winning with 10 men, and Stoke not quite blowing a three-goal lead.

It looks as though it will take something remarkable to get a top-two finish. But stranger things have happened. I guess it's just heads down, do what we need to, and hope some of the others blow it.

When you consider we've only won 5 of our last 15 games, it's something of a miracle that we are still firmly in the shake-up.

I've been suggesting for a while that it would only take a small level of improvement in our form to see us claim a top two spot, but then given I've been saying it since about November, my credibility is in tatters.

It seems every time Pards sorts out one part of the misfiring team (eg. the defence), another part loses its form, hence our inconsistency.

Don't give up yet if we are still in the mix at easter 4th or 5th we will be in an excellent position to come from behind with an improving team which has not peaked yet
