Arsenal pay over £1m for Jenkinson

Arsenal have paid over £1m up front for the signature of Charlton's Carl Jenkinson. More here: Jenkinson

Jenkinson said: 'I hope supporters will understand why I can't turn down such an opportunity, but Charlton will always have a place in my heart,' said Jenkinson. 'I will always be in Charlton's debt for the training they have given me since a young age.'

'I'm grateful to the club's academy and all the coaching staff, so I'm delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement.'

Jenkinson has just tweeted to say that he can't describe his happiness at joining his boyhood club and thanks all the Arsenal fans who have welcomed him. If he was going to go to another London club, Arsenal would be my preferred choice. He may sink or swim there, but it is an opportunity that he cannot turn down.

Carl has been trending on Twitter, but mostly on a 'Who?' basis.

If Arsenal, who have a great track record in spotting young talent, think that Jenkinson is worth much, how could Charlton fail to see this and play him in League 1?

Perhaps he is not the finished article and needs further development. I also think that Charlton were worried about him picking up an injury.

Wyn,
I meant Charlton not playing him more BEFORE Arsenal came in for him, not after the deal was mooted.
That is a lot of money to pay for an unproven youngster, so Arsenal must have seen a lot that they liked in him. A pity that Charlton hadn't spotted the same in their own youngster and used him to improve a mediocre League 1 side.

I understood that's what you meant. But I think it's possible they had an earlier indication that Arsenal were interested and didn't want to have damaged goods which would affect the deal going through and/or the amount received.
