Welcome, Fredrik Ulvestad

The official site has announced that Fredrik Ulvestad has signed on a year's loan from Burnley. The Norway international is described as a box-to-box midfielder: New signing

Despite weeks of speculation, most recently focusing on Crystal Palace, it looks as if Ademola Lookman is staying at The Valley. According to Richard Cawley and other sources, the club has turned down a series of bids from Sheffield Wednesday for Morgan Fox, the last one at over £1.25m.

Bargains for Blues at The Valley?

This article suggests that there could be bargains for Birmingham City at The Valley: Bargains

Top of the list is Johann Berg Gudmundsson. However, Morgan Fox is seen as the real gem. The writer reckons that he could be picked up for £250,000 and has all the potential to become a 'fantastic' full back.

Other clubs are, however, interested in Fox. Many Charlton fans have a low opinion of him. My view is that he is inconsistent: a piece of excellent play one minute, a disastrous error the next. Whether he could be coached to improve is an open question.

Last but not least on the list is Callum Harriott.

All three players are likely to leave, but none of them may go to Birmingham.

Birmingham in for Fox?

A Sunday newspaper report claims that Birmingham City are preparing a bid for Morgan Fox. There have been reports of interest from various clubs over the season.

Fox is not rated highly by many Charlton fans and I find him very inconsistent, a good piece of play followed by a basic error which puts us at risk. However, the case for him being Player of the Year is made here: Underrated

Charlton ready to see off United swoop for Fox

With Luke Shaw out with a broken leg, Louis van Gaal is eyeing Morgan Fox as a possible replacement. But Charlton are ready to offer Fox a new contract to keep him at The Valley: Morgan Fox

Of course, being on a short list is not the same as being made an offer. It may be a long list of all the young left backs playing in England. Some fans think tjis was made up in the Mirror offices.

I know that for a lot of fans Fox is their favourite scapegoat player. I think he is a classic curate's egg: good in parts. He can be very good, but he also makes some silly errors which put us in trouble. In other words, he is a young player who is still developing, and we have a number of those in the first team.

Thinking about Fox bought me back to Paul Sturgess who was left back in the 1993-7 period. I have a framed picture of him with me in my study holding a very garish third shirt. He was the target of much moaning, although he did play a blinder in a cup game against Newcastle United. However, his career ended at Hereford United and Gravesend & Northfleet. I wonder what he is doing now. His Wikipedia entry is a stub, it has even less on it than mine.

Club is over wage budget

Charlton chief executive Katrien Meire has confirmed what she had already told a fan on the train to Wolves: this summer's deal have pushed the club over its wage budget, which helps to explain the lack of last minute activity in the transfer window or of loan deals since.

One of the factors is that Charlton is still playing part of the wages of players who have been loaned out, e.g., Callum Harriott. Read more here: Budget bust

However, new deals are being negotiated for Morgan Fox and Nick Pope.

Wales call up for Morgan Fox

Morgan Fox has been called up to the full Wales squad: Morgan Fox

Fox has been steadily improving his play, in particular showing more confidence going forward. The experience of being with the full Wales squad should help him to develop further.

Three Premiership clubs hunting Fox

The date is March 26th, not April 1st. Nevertheless, it is being reported that three Premier League clubs have an interest in signing Morgan Fox: Morgan Fox

I am not as hard on Fox as the miserable young Bloke Behind Me, but then he calls Vetokele 'useless'. Fox tries hard and there have been some signs of improvement as he gets more match experience. I would still favour a fit Wiggins, although he has never seemed as good as in the past since his bouts of injury. I do find it difficult to see Fox as a Premiership player, even in a bench warming capacity.

Of course, there was reported to be interest from Ipswich before Christmas but Fox never got in the seat of a tractor.

Rotherham win brings new bout of doom and gloom

Rotherham's 4-2 win over Bolton last night has brought a new bout of doom and gloom among some of the Addickted. If Derek from Dymchurch wasn't occupied with campaigning for Ukip, he would have gone into overdrive.

Bolton were no doubt affected by their exertions in securing a draw at Liverpool. As for Rotherham, although their confidence will have got a boost, they may now be over confident and Charlton may be able to grind the Millers down.

After last Saturday's draw at Wolves, there were a lot of gloomy comments about individual players. However, if you look at the Football League Paper scores, a different picture emerges. The lowest score was 6 for Veljkovic on his Addicks debut. Tal Ben Haim got a rare 9 for single handedly dealing with every ball Wolves threw into the box. Everyone else got a 7, apart from the much criticised Morgan Fox who 'dealt well with La Parra, one crucial second half block epitomising a solid display.' So perhaps things aren't as bad as everyone thinks.

Top fan Jonathan Acworth doesn't think so. He has been in touch with Britain's wealthiest man, the Duke of Westminster, whom he proclaims to be a Charlton fan and ready to invest in the club.

However, this may be a smoke screen. Now identified as a royal descendant, and in receipt of a letter from the Queen, Acworth's real target may be the Duke of Edinburgh. It is a little known fact that among his many titles is Baron Greenwich. He just has to be an Addick.

Ipswich hunting Fox

Ipswich Town are reported to be interested in signing Morgan Fox in the January transfer window as a replacement for Tyrone Mings who may be heading for the Emirates: Morgan Fox

I'm not sure how far Wiggins is off fitness, but such a move would leave us without cover at left back, even given that Solly can play there at a stretch.

Fox up for Massive challenge

Morgan Fox made his first team debut for Charlton in the FA Cup against Sheffield Wednesday in February. He told today's Football League Paper 'Wednesday were physical when we played them and it turned into a bit of a dog fight in the end and we scrapped the win. We have got to stay confident, everyone is fine and we all feel we are good enough to stay in the league.'

'José Riga says play with no fear, and the pressure is off because I and the rest of the boys all trust in you. It is the chance I have been waiting for. I didn't expect to be in the team before the end of the season as Rhoys has been playing well. I have great memories from my previous game [at Hillsborough] so I am looking forward to it.'

A useful point?

Charlton drew 0-0 with Bolton at The Valley this afternoon to secure what might have been a useful point if they had beaten Barnsley on Tuesday. As it is, they have gone ahead of Blackpool on goal difference. The Seasiders lost 0-1 at home to Burnley and sound as if they are in free fall. Their assistant coach was sent to the stands after he shoved a substitute in the face as he was about to go on the pitch and fans halted the match by throwing hundreds of tennis balls on the pitch in protest at owner Karl Oyston.

By contrast at Charlton fans got behind the 'sea of red' day. I paid the price for wearing an old CASC top by being stopped by someone at London Bridge with a question about the CAS Trust. Director Katrien Meire came on to the pitch before the game to address fans and was listened to respectfully and was politely applauded, although in the excitement she almost left her capacious handbag by the dugout.

In the first half I felt that we were giving Bolton too much space to attack, especially down their right. Our own efforts to score were way off target. We started to get on target more in the second half, but the key moment was when Church took the ball off the keeper and appeared to be ready to score when the keeper brought him down with his leg. However, the portly referee did not award a penalty and his linesman rubbed it in by repeatedly shaking his head in front of the East Stand.

Astrit Ajdarevic, Reza Ghoochannejhad, Simon Church and Johnnie Jackson all squandered first-half opportunities. David Wheater volleyed over for Bolton and Matt Mills had a header cleared off the line for the visitors. Ajdarevic fired wide and keeper Adam Bogdan did well to block Ghoochannejhad from having a shot. Church also missed a header and Ajdarevic, Ghoochannejhad and Jackson all failed with poor efforts.

Wheater and Mills had chances for Bolton either side of half-time, with Diego Poyet clearing the latter's effort on the goalline. It took 63 minutes for Charlton to have a shot on target, with Bogdan saving Ghoochannejhad's weak shot, and moments later the keeper had to make his second save, this time from Church. Ajdarevic had another effort saved and Jordan Cousins, Jon Obika and Michael Morrison all missed the target. The Addicks would have been made to really pay had Danns done better after Bolton charged down the pitch to find space in front of goal but he scooped his effort over the bar.

Once again we played some neat football, but failed to find the back of the net.

Match analysis

There were a number of strong contenders for the Silver Bone but Ivy the Terrible finally awarded it to Michael Morrison. It was good to see him back and he was strong when he needed to be. Hamer did not have a lot to do, although he did dither unnecessarily once or twice. Dervite was very solid, although one or two attempted passes were poor. Fox had an excellent debut at The Valley, dealing with his opposite number well, making himself available and putting in some good crosses. Wilson got forward well and put in some good passes. One Addick commented rather cruelly that watching Jackson was like seeing a family pet at the end of his life. He did try his best, but he is slowing down markedly. Cousins is knackered, having played too many games at his age at this level. It showed, for example by giving away an unnecessary free kick in a dangerous position. But he did make some good contributions. Poyet once again displayed his natural talents. Astrit is clearly affected by his chest infection, but put in a good shift and was warmly applauded when he was substituted. Reza is disappointing in terms of speed and reaction for someone who is an international player. Church was very involved and was unlucky not to win a penalty. Green seemed to be peeing in the dugout before he came on. He was completely clueless, wandering out of position and making no real contribution. Obika changed very little when he came on. Hughes is often a substitute, but rarely makes it on to the pitch. This was one of the exceptions and he was brought on to shore up the defence and hang on to the point.

Rescue Cat Reg has given the Hiss of the Match to the East Stand linesman who displayed some poor decision-making. The referee was also reluctant to notice pushes in the back.
