Addicks won't be facing Danny Green

Charlton will be breathing a huge sigh of relief with the news that they won't be facing Danny Green next season. He has been released by MK Dons rather late in the summer: Danny Green

However, it looks as if Luton Town might swoop for him, a club that has been a destination for former Addicks in the past.

Charlton through to fourth round

It was a wet and windy night in Oxford as Charlton Athletic faced Oxford United in the FA Cup replay in front of a crowd of 3,225, but the pitch looked in good condition. Charlton won the first corner of the evening after three minutes, but it was unproductive.

Harriott put in a good cross, but Kermorgant was a little late in arriving. Wilson had to block an Oxford attack at the expense of a corner. Jackson headed the ball away, but then had to concede a second corner, followed by a third which was gathered by Alnwick who bowled the ball out well. Harriott put in a good cross from a free kick, but Church was unable to take advantage.

Oxford tried to apply some pressure around the half hour mark, but Morrison defended well. Then on 36 minutes Kermorgant scored with a great finish for Charlton from 20 yards after the Oxford back line had been cut apart with Church playing a key role. Then four minutes later Church burst away into the penalty area and turned provider for Green who scored to make it 2-0 to the Addicks.

HT 0-2

Early appeals for an Oxford penalty were waved away by the referee. The home side had most of the ball in the opening exchanges. Stephens gave away possession cheaply, but Oxford were not able to take advantage.

An effort by Harriott from 35 yards out led to a Charlton corner. The move led to an offside decision against the Addicks. From a free kick Kermorgant put in a curling effort that went over the wall to make it 3-0 to the Addicks.

Evina went down heavily and was holding his left ankle. Mullins brought down Kermorgant and got a yellow card. The free kick from Green was gathered by the keeper. Harriott was taken off and replaced by Pritchard.

With fifteen minutes to go Kermorgant was withdrawn and Sordell came on. Constable made an effort on target, the first from Oxford. It was comfortably saved by Alnwick. Oxford made a double substitution.

Dale Stephens was taken off and replaced by Diego Poyet making his debut. Green made an attempt on goal which was not far wide, although he could have passed to Wilson.

Diego Poyet talks about his debut here with comments by Chris Powell: Poyet

Danny Green hopes for cup run

Danny Green is hoping for a cup run, but first Charlton have to beat Oxford tonight and then go on to beat Huddersfield before they get near a cup run: Green

Having recovered from their Christmas blip, Oxford continued their run of form with a 1-0 away win over rivals Wycombe on Saturday. They are unbeaten away in the league, but at home have won four, drawn five and lost five. The heavy pitch at The Valley may also have suited them.

Danny Green out on loan?

Richard Cawley of the SLP is reporting considerable loan interest in Danny Green, but wonders whether Chris Powell will let him go. That might depend on who arrives on Eurostar from Belgium.

It looks as if Cameron Stewart is going to be signed by Leeds United. Certainly speedy, but oddly reluctant to tackle.

Movement in and out expected

Movement in and out of the Addicks squad is expected before next Thursday's emergency loan deadline. Danny Green is one player who may go out on loan while Jordan Cook is another candidate. Chris Powell also has to consider his striking options with Yann Kermorgant troubled by a persistent injury. Will this mean a revival of Obika speculation? More here: Loans

On the staff side, the Head of Communications post has now been advertised: Comms

Danny Green returns

From the MK Dons website: 'Winger Danny Green has returned to parent club Charlton Athletic following the completion of his loan spell. Green, 25, played the final game of his one-month loan deal this past weekend away at Gillingham, where he set up Patrick Bamford's first goal with a well-placed free-kick. The winger returned to The Valley after the match.' [What you mean he got on the North Kent line?]

'Since joining the Club on Deadline Day, Green made a total of six appearances and helped Karl Robinson's side to three wins and one draw. The Harlow-born midfielder didn't find the net during his short spell at MK1 but still played a key role in the Dons' impressive goal-scoring form.'

Last week, Green told mkdons.com: "I've really enjoyed my time here. This is a really good Club, the Gaffer's brilliant and there are some really nice lads who have made me feel welcome. Training's really intense as well here [implying that it isn't at Sparrows Lane?] so I felt as if my fitness has improved. We do a lot of gym work also, I feel I'm getting stronger and so it's been ideal. The training has a whole has been brilliant, the gaffer is quality here and I've really enjoyed it. I feel like I've gained something."'.

I remain unconvinced that Danny Green is good enough for a starting place at Championship level, but he has his defenders, particularly given our relative lack of proven wingers.

Cameron Stewart in on loan

In a late deal in the transfer window the Addicks have signed Cameron Stewart on loan from Hull City: Stewart

Celtic had been chasing the 22-year old and it was thought that he might join them as he has family north of the border, although he was born in Manchester. He has chosen to represent England rather than Scotland in international youth football. There were also reports that Blackpool were interested in him.

He was originally with Manchester United, but since he joined the Tigers his opportunities for first team football have been limited by injury. Although he is a winger, he can also play as a striker: Cameron Stewart

I had been given to understand that Chris Solly signed a four year contract on Saturday which would increase his value should he be sold, but fortunately he has not been in this transfer window. The announcement has been made today (Thursday). There was also interest in Rhoys Wiggins which may have unsettled him. But it is pleasing that the squad remains intact.

Danny Green has joined MK Dons on a one month loan.

Joe Pigott has signed a three year deal which I think is a very sensible move and will be welcomed by fans.

Convincing cup win for Addicks

The Charlton side for this evening’s league cup match against Oxford United was entirely changed from the one that started against Bournemouth apart from Hamer in goal. 4,935 were in attendance, nearly 800 from Oxford.

Danny Green took the first corner of the evening for Charlton, but it was punched away. Piggott put in a good long-range ball finding Church. Richard Wood had to deal with an Oxford attack. Evina and Cook combined well on the left, but they suffered from a tight offside decision. Oxford won a corner. The referee blew for a free kick.

Simon Church scored his first goal for the Addicks on 18 minutes to take the lead against Oxford. A Green effort from distance went over the bar. Oxford made a good run down the right and Hamer had to make the save. An effort from Fulham loan player Williams went wide. A free kick from Green went over the crossbar.

A good run from Cook set up a corner for Charlton, but Wood was unable to score from six yards out with Oxford defenders in his way.

HT: 1-0

Hollands headed the ball just over. Green took a free kick for Charlton through the wall to make it 2-0. Oxford won a corner which was taken short. Piggott did all the hard work, there was an open goal, but Church put it wide from six yards out. Church made no mistake when he got the opportunity to make it 3-0. Cort won Charlton a corner, but it was punched away. Oxford made two attacking substitutions.

Hamer made a good save off Williams. Cort did enough to block Potter at the expense of a corner. Cort stayed down, but may have been winded and got up. Church was taken off and replaced by Sordell. Cook received a yellow card for a foul on Hunt. Hamer punched away the free kick and fell awkwardly, hurting his right shoulder. Cook went down and needed some treatment. Cook was replaced by Harriott.

The Oxford fans claimed that Wood had used his hand and an Oxford player received a yellow card for dissent. The referee gave Hollands a yellow card for sliding in.

Sordell tried to make it 4-0, but it went wide after a deflection. The ball almost went in from the corner.

Five minutes were added on. Another Oxford player got a yellow for dissent. A Charlton corner was punched away, but the referee blew up anyway. Charlton were given a penalty. Piggott put it in the back of the net. Charlton were in the draw for the second round.

Charlton dominate St. Mirren

Charlton are dominant in today's match against St. Mirren in Spain. Starting with a 3-5-2 formation, the Addicks were 1-0 ahead at the break after Jackson scored following a great pass from Yann Kermorgant.

Hollands made it 2-0 after Wilson turned provider. Kermorgant then made it 3-0 with a great overhead kick. Late on in the game the Breton was replaced by Piggott.

The final score was 4-0 with the last goal scored by Danny Green.

The rumour mill starts

I haven't got the time to check out any of these stories at the moment, but we are being linked once again with Sam Baldock (he was seen as a prospect before his move to Bristol City). I was a bit underwhelmed by his performance for them in the last game of the season, but he may have known that he was on his way out. There is some credibility in buying from a relegated Championship club, but the price tag would be at least £1m and we might have to sell first to afford that.

Richard Cawley at the South London Press tweeted yesterday about reports of a £250k bid for Crawley Town defender Mark Connolly Connolly . Taking a player from League 1 also looks plausible, but I would have thought that the priority was the midfield. But that does not, please, mean a return for Nicky Bailey.

Richard Cawley has tweeted this morning that Charlton are open to offers for Dale Stephens (Aston Villa were interested at one time), Danny Hollands and Danny Green. Hollands has found the transition to the Championship difficult and Green tends to be inconsistent.

PDC says sorry

Paolo di Canio has apologised to Bradley Wright-Phillips and Danny Green over the transfer day confusion surrounding their move to the County Ground. Swindon sources are indicating that the deal may be revived once the takeover of the club is approved by the Football League, although there is still some uncertainty about whether di Canio will be staying. The Currant Bun has ever suggested that the deal could be done tomorrow, but that seems unlikely to me.

Danny Green out on loan?

Richard Cawley is tweeting that Danny Green may go out on loan to either Swindon or MK Dons, it increasingly looks like a done deal at Swindon. Cawley also said earlier that he expected some movement in and out before the end of transfer deadline day, movement which could, of course, take the form of loans. Perhaps the one 50-50 prediction one can make is that someone is going to end up at the County Ground.

Cawley also said that enquiries were expected for Bradley Wright-Phillips, but only Championship clubs could afford his wages. Sheffield United were definitely interested but have ruled it out on cost grounds as it was take them over the Salary Cost Management Protocol: Wright-Phillips . It looks as if he will go to Swindon on loan for the rest of the season. A takeover bid for the Rocking Robins has been made from the man who owns the Puritans (Banbury United).

Skipper Johnnie Jackson has tweeted that Chris Solly is not at the training ground today and he hopes that does not meant that he is going as it would be a big loss, a view I would strongly endorse. Solly has won more Silver Bones than any other player this season.

Loan deal for Green?

Bournemouth, MK Dons and Notts County are all reported to have expressed interest in a loan deal for Danny Green. He did look a bit cheesed off warming up on Saturday.

Transfer rumours

It's difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff at this time of year - and most of it is chaff. Some stories are started by agents trying to promote their player or are the result of speculative thinking by something on Twitter trying to create a wish list. In that category I place Anton Ferdinand signing for Charlton on loan.

That Chris Powell might have an interest in Norwich City's Simeon Jackson as a loan target makes sense, which doesn't mean that it is going to happen. More about him here: Jackson

I don't see Bradley Wright-Phillips going to MK Dons, even if his father is coaching there. I can see that Swindon might want to sign Danny Hollands, but not as an exchange for Matt Richie plus cash. In any case his loan there has just been extended for a second month.

Earlier reports of an interest by Birmingham City in Danny Green have now been followed up with suggestions that they would like to swop him for 34-year old Wade Elliott.

The safest prediction is that not that much is going to change in this window.

Blues in for Green?

The rumour mill is suggesting that Birmingham City have an interest in Danny Green. However, the cash strapped club will not be able to making any signings unless they sell some of their existing players.

Danny Green is one of the more inconsistent players at Charlton. Although he can power down the wing, the quality of the cross he provides is highly variable.

Swindon wanted Green

Richard 'Creepy' Crawley has tweeted that Swindon wanted Danny Green on an emergency loan, but Charlton did not agree. Three younger players went out on loan yesterday to gain experience: Loan

The bookies have Charlton as favourites to win tomorrow, but Huddersfield are hoping that their solid away record and the indifferent record of Charlton at home will count in their favour: Huddersfield

The weather forecast does not look too promising with the prospect of heavy rain arriving by the start of the game and possibly high winds as well which does not make for a good match.

Two more signings

The signing of Dale Stephens from Oldham is imminent for £375,000 on a 3-year contract. Danny Green from Dagenham is expected to sign tomorow: Signings

Now we just need to do something about central defence.

Two more signings?

The Addicks have been linked with up-and-coming Dagenham and Redbridge midfielder Danny Green who was with Charlton until he was fifteen, but Sky have reported that a Championship club (possibly Ipswich) have made a better offer: Green

The Sun, however, reckons that we have signed him for £400,000: Signed

After being let go by Charlton, Green then signed for Northampton Town earning his first professional contract but moved to Nottingham Forest a year later. In 2008 Green was released by Forest and signed for Conference South club Bishop's Stortford.

We are also being linked with Oldham midfielder Dale Stephens. In the case of Stephens, Sky say we are about to make an offer, but a number of other Championship and League 1 clubs are in the frame: Stephens

Addicks face competition for Green's signature

Charlton face competition as they seek the signature of Danny Green from relegated Dagenham & Redbrdge. The former Nottingham Forest youngster has found the back of the net 13 times this season and the cash strapped Daggers are open to offers.

Millwall are eyeing a double swoop for Green and team mate Romain Vincelot. Other Championship sides that are interested include Brighton and Ipswich, so Charlton's chances are not good.

Of the relegated sides, both Preston and Sheffield United are slashing their squads to reduce their wage bills.
