Remembering Bradley Wright-Phillips

It was good to see former Addick Bradley Wright-Phillips acting as a pundit for ITV in last night's game between Canada and South Africa.   He had a successful career in the MSL, retiring at age 37 and is now a pundit in the States.

He grew up in Brockley and went to Haberdasher's Aske school in New Cross.

On 24 January 2011, it was announced that Wright-Phillips was moving to Charlton for an undisclosed fee. He scored the only goal on his debut against Colchester on 1 February 2011.[ On 28 February 2012, he scored a hat-trick in a 4–0 win at Chesterfield.  Wright-Phillips contributed 22 goals in 42 matches as Charlton won the 2011-12 League One title. He was released by the Addicks at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Pritchard's picks

Former Charlton midfielder Bradley Pritchard chooses a number of former Charlton team mates in his Dream Team in this week's Football League Paper.

Of Chris Solly he says, 'He's a club hero at Charlton. I probably remember 20 minutes of one game against Middlesbrough where he struggled but, apart from that, no one has ever come close to dribbling past him on a regular basis. He's got the footballing brain to play in the Premier.'

Ben Hamer qualifies 'because he has the best distribution of any keeper I've played with. He could hit half-volleys with incredible accuracy. He has the body of a postman, though.' [What does this mean?]

'I have to go for my ex-room-mate Cedric Evina, purely because people need a bit of humour to concentrate on the pitch and he was a real character. One of the key things the year Charlton went up from League One was our team spirit and he was one of the guys that created that atmosphere.'

Dale Stephens 'was certainly one of the best midfielders I've ever played with, he was just a complete player. He was outstanding in Charlton's promotion year. His distribution was superb and I think he's Premier quality.'

Danny Hollands: 'The year Charlton went up I think he got eight goals and he's fantastic on a night out as well. He definitely helps with the team spirit. A lot of memories I have of Charlton are off the field and Danny is one of the major protagonists in those.'

Bradley Wright-Phillips had to be included 'after the year he's had with New York Red Bulls. You could see he was a quality finisher and a good guy to have around the place. After all he did to get Charlton into the Championship, it was good to see him get the recognition he deserves at Red Bulls.

Golden boot for Bradley Wright-Phillips

Bradley Wright-Phillips has equalled the all time goal scoring record in Major League Soccer and has also won the golden boot. Great to see his career resurrected: Wright-Phillips

Come in No.99

Bradley Wright-Phillips isn't going to be making his fortune at New York Red Bulls. His baseline salary will be $50,000.04 with a 'guaranteed' $92,500.04. Don't ask me what the four cents is for, but given that New York is an expensive place he won't have that much to live on: Wright-Phillips.

According to a tweet, his squad number is going to be 99!

Wright-Phillips joins Red Bulls

Bradley Wright-Phillips has joined MLS franchise New York Red Bulls, subject to obtaining a visa. They were impressed by his pace and technical ability. Here is an American assessment of Wright-Phillips: Wright-Phillips

Thanks for all he contributed at Charlton and wishing him every success across the pond.

Leage 1 clubs chase Bradley Wright-Phillips

Brentford and Walsall are the leading contenders for the signature of Bradley Wright-Phillips after he was formally let go by the Addicks with deservedly warm praise from Chris Powell. For his part Wright-Phillips has made it clear that he will not take a rushed decision, but will weigh up his options.

The 28-year old scored 32 goals in 87 appearances for Charlton and played a key role in our League 1 promotion campaign. I hope all goes well for him.

Wright-Phillips in US move

Former Addicks striker Bradley Wright-Phillips is on trial with the New York Red Bulls as he seeks to re-start his career: Wright-Phillips

Saturday, 30 March 2013

That's why it's Good Friday!

Birmingham City took all the Nectar points at Sainsbury's yesterday evening by beating Crystal Palace 4-0 in a clinical display. Shocked supremo Ian Holloway conceded that Palace's promotion challenge is in danger of losing momentum at precisely the wrong time. He was left stunned by his side's capitulation. He said, 'I am shocked. I am finding it hard to cope with. That was unrecognisable. That is a huge dent in what we want to achieve. Losing at Brighton seems to have dented everything. That was awful - awful result, awful day.'

However, it was Thai takeaways all round for Millwall after they edged a 1-0 victory over 10-man Leicester at what was the Crispbowl. My Foxes supporting friend Stacey was losing it badly in her tweets after Leicester's captain was sent off after three minutes and she has my sympathy, although the sending off seems to have been justified.

The 1-1 draw between Blackpool and Blackburn put the two teams ahead of the Addicks on goal difference with Charlton now 17th. Huddersfield are also on 47 points but have a far inferior goal difference to us. These things could count at the end of the season. The woes of Bristol City increased as they went down 3-0 at Derby.

Elsewhere, Bradley Wright-Phillips found the net for Brentford in their 2-1 win over Notts County, while Mambo scored for Shrewsbury in their 2-2 draw at Carlisle.

Good news for former Charlton defender Jon Fortune whose efforts to get himself fit at Chatham Town have succeeded. He has signed for Dagenham & Redbridge until the end of the season.

Wright-Phillips: why I had to go out on loan

Bradley Wright-Phillips tells the South London Press why he had to go out on loan. He says that he knows some of the reasons why he wasn't playing much and some he doesn't know, but he emphaises that there has been no falling out with Charlton or Chris Powell: Wright-Phillips

Sunday, 10 March 2013

How did loaned out players do?

We now have a number of players out on loan. John Sullivan was in goal for AFC Wimbledon in their 3-2 win over York City and got a 7 for his efforts from the Football League Paper. He set up one of their goals with a long ball.

Cambridge United beat Woking 1-0 and Nick Pope got the top score of 8 from the Non-League Paper. He wasn't troubled that much by a woeful Cards attack that had one of their players punching the pitch in frustration after he had put the ball way over, but what he had to do he did well.

Outfield players on loan do not necessarily get to start and Michael Smith came on in the 34th minute in Colchester United's 1-2 home defeat to Crewe. Unfortunately, he ballooned his best chance over and got a score of 6.

Bradley Wright-Phillips was brought on in the 55th minute at Carlisle after the Bees had gone 2-0 down which was the final score. He also got a rating of 6.

It's a competitive league

Bolton's 1-0 win over Peterborough last night saw them move five places up the Championship to 10th with their fans already talking of a play off place, just as Sheffield Wednesday fans were on the train after their result over us. As a consequence, Charlton went down to 15th. The Addicks are now eight points above struggling Wolves in the relegation zone and nine points off the play off places. I think we will finish around where we are now which is what I expected at the beginning of the season, given the quality of the squad. But we need a win on Saturday.

Bradley Wright-Phillips started for Brentford in their 2-1 win at Crawley last night. However, he did not find the back of the net and was subbed after 75 minutes.

Wright-Phillips becomes Bee

Bradley Wright-Phillips has joined Brentford on loan until the end of the season when his contract expires, so we may not see him in a Charlton shirt again. Any prospect of him going to Swindon disappeared with the club in chaos with the takeover not agreed and Paolo di Canio resigning.

'Bradley is a player we have been looking at for a long time,' Brentford sporting director Mark Warburton said. Warburton told the club website: 'He is a proven scorer in this division and hopefully he can help us achieve our aims and ambitions for the season. He is a player that was chased by teams in the Championship and some of our rivals for promotion this season, so we are delighted we could secure him. He had an outstanding season in League One last season and hopefully he can continue that form this time around.'

PDC says sorry

Paolo di Canio has apologised to Bradley Wright-Phillips and Danny Green over the transfer day confusion surrounding their move to the County Ground. Swindon sources are indicating that the deal may be revived once the takeover of the club is approved by the Football League, although there is still some uncertainty about whether di Canio will be staying. The Currant Bun has ever suggested that the deal could be done tomorrow, but that seems unlikely to me.

Danny Green out on loan?

Richard Cawley is tweeting that Danny Green may go out on loan to either Swindon or MK Dons, it increasingly looks like a done deal at Swindon. Cawley also said earlier that he expected some movement in and out before the end of transfer deadline day, movement which could, of course, take the form of loans. Perhaps the one 50-50 prediction one can make is that someone is going to end up at the County Ground.

Cawley also said that enquiries were expected for Bradley Wright-Phillips, but only Championship clubs could afford his wages. Sheffield United were definitely interested but have ruled it out on cost grounds as it was take them over the Salary Cost Management Protocol: Wright-Phillips . It looks as if he will go to Swindon on loan for the rest of the season. A takeover bid for the Rocking Robins has been made from the man who owns the Puritans (Banbury United).

Skipper Johnnie Jackson has tweeted that Chris Solly is not at the training ground today and he hopes that does not meant that he is going as it would be a big loss, a view I would strongly endorse. Solly has won more Silver Bones than any other player this season.

Wright-Phillips to Swindon?

Reports are circulating that Bradley Wright-Phillips is going on loan to Swindon for the rest of the season. Swindon have certainly favoured Charlton players recently, although he would not be able to link up with Paul Benson who has gone on loan to Cheltenham.

Richard 'Creepy' Crawley has tweeted his doubts, pointing out that Wright-Phillips is on big wages. Swindon are certainly financially troubled, having been put up for sale as an alternative to administration. However, it might be worth paying a wages subsidy to the Rocking Robins.

After performing excellently in League 1, Wright-Phillips has found it difficult to make the adjustment to a higher level.

Anthony Wordsworth has now signed for Ipswich. I still think there was some interest there on our part.

Is Sordell a target?

Press reports are claiming that 21-year old Bolton striker Marvin Sordell is a target for Charlton. He was the hero of Bolton's cup win at Sunderland, scoring both goals. Whilst he would be a welcome addition to the squad, I don't see it as very likely, although the implication in the story is that he is not too happy 'oop north, having formerly been at Watford: Sordell

If he did come, it would increase the chances of Bradley Wright-Phillips leaving, although nothing more has been heard on that front.

Sordell originally came from Pinner: Career

Transfer rumours

It's difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff at this time of year - and most of it is chaff. Some stories are started by agents trying to promote their player or are the result of speculative thinking by something on Twitter trying to create a wish list. In that category I place Anton Ferdinand signing for Charlton on loan.

That Chris Powell might have an interest in Norwich City's Simeon Jackson as a loan target makes sense, which doesn't mean that it is going to happen. More about him here: Jackson

I don't see Bradley Wright-Phillips going to MK Dons, even if his father is coaching there. I can see that Swindon might want to sign Danny Hollands, but not as an exchange for Matt Richie plus cash. In any case his loan there has just been extended for a second month.

Earlier reports of an interest by Birmingham City in Danny Green have now been followed up with suggestions that they would like to swop him for 34-year old Wade Elliott.

The safest prediction is that not that much is going to change in this window.

Hornets can sting

The general view was that we were unfortunate not to get anything out of our home game with Watford in October when we went down 1-2 to the 10-man opposition: Watford. However, the chances of getting anything more than a draw at Vicarage Road tomorrow are not that promising. Watford are currently 3rd in the home table and Charlton are currently bottom. The Hornets have been defeated just once in 11 games.

I saw the quite long excerpt on The Football League Show of Watford's 3-1 victory at the Amex over Brighton and Hove Albion (it is certainly a longer excerpt than Charlton customarily get). The Hornets looked full of confidence and particularly strong in the counter attack.

Czech international Matej Vydra, on loan from Udinese, is clearly a danger man. At Brighton he scored two goals and provided an assist, as well as forcing a good save from the Albion keeper. Troy Deeny's goal was also excellent and he provided the assist for Vydra's second. In midfield Chalobah was calm and composed on the ball, delivering well-weighted passes throughout: just what we haven't got at Charlton. Fitz Hall did everything that was asked of him in defence, but Alumnia in goal made a silly mistake to give away the penalty. Although clearly a more than competent keeper, he can be pressured to make errors.

Charlton will be without Michael Morrison in defence. As Hungry Ted has noted in his blog, the consensus among the Addickted is that Chris Powell should have taken him off at half time. Even just listening to the commentary, it was clear to me that the rotund referee had him in his sights. It has been observed that he has been playing below his usual standard in recent games and this has led him to make errors that can attract cards.

Bradley Wright-Phillips impressed on Saturday and arguably did enough to earn a starting place. Bradley Pritchard was his usual vigorous self. After a hesitant start, Evina did well, certainly better than Seaborne who was angling for a permanent berth in a programme interview a few weeks ago: thanks, but no thanks.

I can make one prediction with confidence about this match: the symmetry of Charlton's away record will end. Currently we have won four, drawn four and lost four. Watford have lost as many matches at home as away (four), but I fear a loss for the Addicks to start 2013. Odds are: Watford 5/6, Draw 5/2, Charlton 10/3

Whilst we shouldn't blame referees for our own poor performances, it's not good news that Trevor Kettle is refereeing this match. He rewarded the horror tackle on Grant Basey at Bristol Rovers by Dominic Blizzard with a yellow card, although he did have the grace to apologise afterwards. Views by fans of this cloud of steam are far from favourable: Kettle

In the event of a defeat, if Chris Powell is not provided with a taxi then or shortly afterwards, he is probably safe for the rest of the season, barring a complete collapse. We don't need to add to the crazy turnover of Championship managers.

Charlton hold on for point

Charlton retained their unbeaten record in the Championship with a 0-0 draw with Hull City at The Valley this afternoon. Torrential rain accompanied by thunder and lightning made it difficult for both teams to play good football on a saturated pitch in the second half but the visitors stepped up the pressure. However, Ben Hamer made a number of substitutions to keep the Addicks in the game and after the game received the coveted Silver Bone from match analyst Ivy the Terrible.

Many of the Addickted thought that we should have had a penalty for handball in the second half, but I didn't really get a close look. In a game in which no cards were issued, Chris Powell made no substitutions, leading to a shout of 'Sort it out Chrissie!' from near me. Others felt that the failure to make substitutions refected the quality of the bench.

However, I am far from clear that they would have made any difference. The quality of the teams we are facing is far higher this season and it is to our credit that we are holding our own. The defences are much stronger and we are no longer faced with 'hoof it and hope'. We get much less time on the ball and are more readily dispossessed. For example, Wiggins was much freer to forage forward last season.

I didn't think we made a particularly good start to the match. We were getting caught in possession too much. Hamer had to make an early save, having been let down by the defence. After the quarter hour mark we started to put in some good attacks. Hollands put in a good ball to Wright-Phillips but it was saved. Wiggins turned provider for Wright-Phillips who drew a great save. Then it was Hamer's turn to make a save.

The last quarter of an hour provided more chance of scoring. On 34 minutes Charlton won the first corner of the game. It was played back in and headed over the bar. A second corner was played in and Wright-Phillips was only just off target. Jackson won the ball and Kermorgant drew a great save off Amos.

Another Charlton corner was followed by a second and the header was just wide. Then, as the half drew to a close, it was Hull's turn to have two corners.

Half time: 0-0

Lightning had already been seen in the first half and the second was dominated by the weather. Indeed, it now emerges that the referee did consider calling the players off. At Wycombe the game was abandoned after the stand was hit by lightning.

Hull won an early corner. Wright-Phillips appeared to have beaten the offside trap, his shot was saved, but Kermorgant scored off the rebound. However, the lino had raised his flag when Wright-Phillips first burst through. I did think it was very marginal, but Chris Powell was convinced it was a goal.

Wright-Phillips won a corner but it was unproductive. Hull took off Bruce (no relation) and brought on McShane. Then it was the turn of German 'wunderkid' Proschwitz who was replaced by former Arsenal academy player Jay Simpson who turned out to be more of a threat.

A free kick led to a Charlton corner. Hull had two corners and then there was the handball shout for a penalty. Charlton won a corner but the header was just wide. Simpson just missed when he should have scored. Hamer made a great save off Aluko. With five minutes added on the Addicks won a free kick which led to a corner. Hamer then had to make a double save to keep Charlton in the game.

Steve Bruce had to rush to the station after the game, but his assistant Steve Agnew said, 'A point away at Charlton is a good point. They're a good side and have a lot of momentum. They're going to be a tough nut to crack at home this season.'

Crystal Palace lost again to stay bottom on zero points, but have said they will be active in signing new players between now and the end of the transfer window as they prepare for their match at The Valley. The Massives beat the Spanners 3-2 with a last minute goal, but as someone said leaving the ground, a 2-2 would have been better.

Match analysis

Morrison did his job very well, showing that he has had no problems stepping up a level. Cort was under pressure in the first twenty minutes or so and made one fumble. But then he settled down and coped well, apart from one time when he had to be rescued later in the game. Solly read the game well and was completely dependable. Wiggins was more constrained than last season, but wsa still a potential threat down the left flank. Stephens needs to be quicker and tends to let the game go by him. Hollands had some really nice touches and passed well. Pritchard really got involved and made one excellent move down the right. A bit harsh of the The Football League Paper to say that 'quality of delivery often let him down'. Jackson provided a good free kick, but his corners were disappointing. Wright-Phlllips was really up for it and caused Hull all sorts of problems. A 'bon mot' from the Bloke Behind Me: when did we last have two Bradleys in the team? Kermorgant was in the thick of it again and increasingly got fouled as the game went on. Came close to scoring in the first half.

Juneau the Soccer Cat has focused on transport issues for the Hiss of the Match. People standing side by side is a frequent phenomenon on the tube at the weekends, but yesterday at Euston a middle aged shaven headed guy who looked as if he belonged at the Toolbox blocked the escalator by standing in the middle of it. Virgin Trains have had people rushing to their defence, but the train to Coventry ran slowly and was 20 minutes late with no explanation.

Charlton win, Massives triumph

Charlton beat Leicester City 2-1 at The Valley last night to continue their promising start to the season through first half goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Yann Kermorgant. Over the 96 minutes possession was 50-50 and the Addicks were under the cosh to some extent in the second half when the Foxes threatened down the flanks. King pulled one back for Leicester, but Charlton held on to take the three points.

The Addicks had taken the lead somewhat against the run of play on 18 minutes when Bradley Pritchard turned provider for Wright-Phillips who turned on the edge of the penalty area to fire a superb low shot past keeper Schmeichel. He then had to make good saves from Cort and Wright-Phillips.

Yann Kermorgant had been booed by the Foxes when his name was read out but made good use of the ball from a Hollands corner to lash it past Schmeichel, putting his finger to lips in celebration.

At half time new signing Ricardo Fuller was paraded before the Valley faithful.

In the second half Ben Hamer was called into action, saving well from Dyer twice and Knockaert before keeping out a stoppage time header from Vardy and preventing a repeat of the Birmingham disappointment.

Work commitments kept me away from The Valley, although I was part of the recorded attendance of 16,658, meaning that over 5,000 walk up tickets were sold. The featured game on Radio 5 was inevitably at Hillsborough. I didn't listen but at the end the commentators kept up with the media obsession with Wednesday, salivating about the strength of the side, the magnificence of the ground and the enormity of the support. Then on BBC TV a short summary of the Championship results picked out 'promoted Sheffield Wednesday' for their 3-2 win over the Blues.

Charlton are third in the table and Palace with null points are bottom.
