Spalding swoop for Maddison

Spalding United have signed Marcus Maddison who was let go by Charlton: https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/spaldingunited/news/marcus-maddison-commits-to-spalding-united-2617582.html

I hope that things work out for him and he is able to make use of his undoubted talent and rebuild his career.

Maddison may leave football

Marcus Maddison will not be returning to Charlton and is considering walking away from football: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/no-charlton-athletic-return-for-marcus-maddison-as-he-considers-walking-away-from-football/

Return of the prodigal

Bolton Wanderers have ended Marcus Maddison's loan spell at the club, saying that he is in need of more support: https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/19226765.marcus-maddison-back-charlton-bolton-end-loan-well-being-concern/

Maddison rocking up at Sparrows Lane could be the biggest challenge Nigel Adkins has faced so far.  It has been suggested that he could be given the post code for Millwall's training ground.

Maddison was not 'having a kip'

The Bolton Wanderers supremo has denied reports that Marcus Maddison missed training because he overslept as claimed by the Daily Mail.  In fact the 'playmaker' was ill: https://the72.co.uk/225886/bolton-wanderers-boss-adds-clarity-to-charlton-athletic-loanees-situation-amid-oversleeping-claims/

Bowyer admits: my move for maverick didn't work

Besieged boss Lee Bowyer demands professionalism.   He admits that he took a gamble with Marcus Maddison and it didn't pay off: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/i-demand-professionalism-charlton-boss-lee-bowyer-on-marcus-maddisons-bolton-loan/

For Bowyer's many critics, this will be grist to the mill.   When I had management responsibilities, I made some poor recruitment decisions, but I didn't face trial by social media.  I just had to live with the consequences.

I am by no means uncritical of Bowyer's decision-making.  I do agree with Curbs that a consistent team brings consistent results.  However, I do think that there is execsssive short termism in football and managerial turnover has increased far too much.

The evidence of managerial changes turning things round is rather weak and anecdotal.   At least you have to be careful what you wish for.   It is too easy to appoint a dinosaur like Sam Allardyce and hope for a miracle which doesn't come.

Maddison on his way?

Unconfirmed reports are saying that Marcus Maddison could be moving to League Two Bolton, it appears as a permanent deal.

There have been reports of tensions between Maddison and Lee Bowyer and allegations that he has been an unsettling influence in the camp.

Richard Cawley says as much as he can for now:https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/marcus-maddison-could-make-charlton-exit-to-bolton-wanderers/

He's gone: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/marcus-maddisons-charlton-career-is-over-as-he-joins-bolton-wanderers-on-loan/

It is also been rumoured that Solomon-Obator has committed to Wigan for the rest of the season after turning down an offer from Charlton.

Where is Marcus Maddison?

When I was at primary school my uncle who had a newsagents in Lakedale Road taught me to 'read between the lines' of news reports.   That certainly applies to this story about Marcus Maddison: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-manager-lee-bowyer-provides-update-on-marcus-maddisons-fitness/

The flamboyant player has apparently stopped training for 'a number of reasons'.   Indeed, it appears that he has been absent from Sparrows Lane for reasons that are unclear.   There have been claims of tensions between him and sanguine supremo Lee Bowyer.

Bowyer's forced rotation policy

Besieged boss Lee Bowyer has responded to criticisms of the fact that Charlton have made more team changes than any other club in League One.  Alan Curbishley has been emphasising the 'consistent team, consistent results' theme in his interviews.

According to Bowyer, the problem has been the state of the squad at the start of the season and injuries to key players since then: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/lee-bowyer-has-his-say-on-why-charlton-lead-the-way-for-most-team-changes-in-league-one/

I can see that, although I sometimes wonder about who starts and who gets substituted and when.  But those decisions are tricky for any manager.

Akin Famewo and Andrew Shinnie should be back for the game against Peterborough, although 'back' usually means a ringside seat on the bench: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-get-positive-news-on-injured-duo-with-marcus-maddison-set-for-scan-on-ankle-injury/

Marcus Maddison is going to have a scan on his ankle injury.

Bishop's moves checkmate Charlton

Two goals by former Leamington ace Colby Bishop saw Charlton defeated 0-2 by Accrington Stanley at The Valley with the snow falling this evening.   Both goals were avoidable and the result of poor defending but Bishop showed composure in scoring them.

At the other end there was just not enough creativity and pressure by Charlton to create enough scoring opportunities.   The Addicks have not kept a clean sheet for seven games.

Before the game I wrote about Bishop: 'Colby Bishop has scored 42 goals for Accrington since joining them from the Brakes in 2019 for an undisclosed fee.   He was a formidable force with an eye for goal when he was at Leamington and Accrington scouts have been at Harbury Lane for the last few home games eyeing another likely recruit, given how their investment in Bishop paid off.

Charlton looked as if they might pose an early threat, but Accrington were soon on top.  The visitors were given too much room in central midfield.

The Addicks did win a succession of corners, but they were unproductive.   Baxter in the Accrington goal had to parry a shot from the lively Millar.   Baxter saved well from Forster-Caskey.

The first goal was Route One with a long goal kick not being dealt with by Pearce who got his header to Amos wrong.  It was then an easy finish for Bishop as excited Leamington fans tweeted 'He loves scoring in front of the Sky cameras.'

A Gilbey shot was blocked and a Forster-Caskey effort was over the bar.   It could be argued that the two sides were level in the first half.  As Richard Cawley noted, Charlton had one or two very good chances, but they had been easily cut open.

HT: 0-1

Aneke was brought on for Washington after the break, but this time the super sub had relatively little impact.  Morgan, who had picked up a yellow card, put in a good shot amid a crowd of players after great work by Maatsen, but the ball was deflected and a free kick followed.   Maatsen then had to deal with a threatening attack by Accrington at the expense of a corner.

Millar and Morgan were taken off for Maddison and Williams as Bowyer rang the changes.  But all hope of a Charlton revival largely ended when Bishop made it 2-0 with an easy finish after poor defending by Oshilaja who had also been at fault early in the first half.

Charlton were not able to win the ball enough and were not creating enough chances, although a good ball from Maddison won the Addicks a corner.   In desperation Bowyer took off Smyth and called Schwartz away from his bench warming duties.

A ball from Oshilaja caused defensive confusion, but Amos coped well.  An over eager Maatsen got a yellow card.

A further blow saw Maddison on the floor after he got his foot stuck in the turf.  He hobbled away and Purrington came on.  Asked if Maddison was seriously injured, Bowyer said: '"I don't know. I don't care. You've got a player who is jumping out of tackles and then he says he got a knock before that. If you do that again then you're done.'

In time added on a Forster-Caskey shot was palmed away and a Charlton corner was cleared off the line.

Charlton are now 7th, having been overtaken by Accrington.

Maddison deal on agaim?

Sky Sports is reporting: 'Charlton Athletic are in advanced talks over a deal for Peterborough attacker Marcus Maddison. The 26-year-old’s Posh contract expires at the end of the season and the club are keen to avoid losing him on a Bosman free transfer in the summer.'

They will be glad to see the back of 'Moody Marcus' at Peterborough: He will soon be forgotten

Talented, but is he the player for us?

Richard Cawley has tweeted to say that he does not think talks are at an advanced stage, so this may be fake news. Perhaps confusion arose over the talks for a new deal for the Sparrows Lane tea lady.

Has the Ego landed in Birmingham?

Birmingham City are claiming that they have had a bid accepted for Marcus Maddison and are proceeding to talks with the player. Earlier Peterborough United thought that Birmingham's offers were too low, but now they are so fed up with him that they may accept a reduced offer: Heading for Birmingham?

It is understood that Birmingham have provided a dialect translator in case Maddison misunderstands what is being said to him.

Fergie loses his rag with Maddison

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has got his hair dryer out. The frustrated supremo has made it clear that he is unhappy with the 'circus act' surrounding Marcus Maddison and he is dropping him from the side in an effort to get him to make his mind up about his future: Fed up with the circus act

As the flat fields around Peterborough rocked to a Vesuvius style football explosion, the frustrated supremo said: 'The chairman offered him an excellent contract last summer which he turned down because he wanted Championship football which is fine. I get that.'

'And the chairman has now found two Championship clubs willing to take him on and he now can’t agree personal terms. The deals are also good for the club as Marcus only has six months on his contract left.'

Maddison may be a good footballer, certainly in his own estimation, but do we want his ego in the dressing room?

Maddison gives it large so deal is off - but it's fake news

It looks as if a fake Twitter account may have given the news about the deal with Peterborough over Marcus Maddison having failed. One Charlton fan has done some detective work and sorted out the difference between the real and fake accounts.

Peterborough did, however, give the green light for talks (via their own web page) earlier in the week and there has been no definite news. Perhaps it's just a case of waiting for the medical. Best to wait for something one way or the other from Richard Cawley or Louis Mendez.

Other clubs have expressed an interest. Birmingham City have made a number of bids for Maddison, but have fallen short of the required amount (at least £2.5m). Blackburn Rovers are also interested according to 'Lancs Live'.

Moaners and pessimists will no doubt be on their keyboards, but this is a time for calm and realism. It's all too easy to waste money in the January transfer window on Carlos Kickabout or Joe Journeyman.

What is not fake news is that Matt Southall is in Abu Dhabi talking to His Excellency which has to be encouraging.

Maddison in talks with Charlton

Louis Mendez reveals: 'As of this morning Peterborough has accepted a bid from Charlton who have permission to talk terms with [Marcus Maddison]. Two other Championship clubs have bid for the player multiple times & do not currently have permission to speak to the player.'

In case you think this is fake news, here is the official 'Posh' statement: Bid accepted

Maddison is an attacking midfielder who can also play at left back: Career details

He came on a sub in Posh's goalless draw with Gillingham on Saturday. He is clearly not Lionel Messi in disguise, but we shall have to wait and see.

A rather mixed response from Posh fans online, including the inevitable 'could have gone to a bigger club than Charlton', Peterborough being massive: Nine goal man

The local paper is taking the line that it's far from a done deal and he may decided not to move, given that Charlton are in line be relegated to League One next season (whereas Peterborough will no doubt be promoted): It's far from a done deal
