'Fans will never accept our owner but he wants success'

This is the headline over a double page spread interview of Karl Robinson by Henry Winter in The Times this morning.

Robinson covers a range of topics from Tony Watt's caffeine consumption to his wife's dress shop. The story starts with the recent meeting with fans in the Greenwich Tavern. Robinson commented on the meeting, 'For me it's more important to heal the club than get promotion.'

Of Katrien Meire he says, 'She's remorseful about some of the things she's said and done at Charlton. She's learning on the job. She's emotionally attached to Charlton, she loves being at Charlton and is desperate to get it right.'

Of Roland, Robinson says, 'He doesn't meddle one little bit. The wage bill is the biggest I have ever had even when I was in the Championship with MK Dons. [Maybe all that does is tell us about penny pinching at the Franchisees]. At no stage in my conversations with the owner or chief exec was this fractious club, this divided club ever hidden from me.'

Of Tony Watt, he says, 'He is so talented it is ridiculous ... Tony is the most complex footballer in England, extremely talented, crazy, unstable, caring, unfit, argumentative. He drinks too much caffeine .... We are trying to occupy Tony's mind.'

Robinson says that the passion at The Valley is 'phenomenal' 'But this undercurrent slightly pulls you back. The players will say it's not troubling them because of the macho mentality, but some have told me they find it difficult at times.'

Who is Charlton's new assistant manager?

Jonathan Acworth has had two phone calls with Russell Slade recently and has been hopeful of moving either into the dugout or replacing Katrien Meire as chief executive. Have Acworth's dreams come true? Read about the identity of the new assistant manager at Addick's Third Division Diary: Acworth overlooked shock

The club's article also reveals that Plymouth is now part of Cornwall which will be a real shock to Devonians. I suspect that the longer term plan is to make it part of Belgium.

You can also read about the return of Tony Watt to his native heath with the Jam Tarts.

Slade is the right man for Charlton says Watt

Having worked with him at Cardiff last season, Tony Watt says that Russell Slade is the right man for Charlton: Watt praises Slade

The plaudits keep coming in, let's hope they are justified. At least he has experience of dealing with a barking owner.

Watt hopes to be fit enough to play for Charlton in the traditional curtain raiser against Welling: Prodigal returns

Watt out for 12 weeks

Tony Watt is to see a specialist about his groin injury, but is expected to be out of action for 12 weeks. Blackburn Rovers still have to meet his wages. This could affect plans to offload him in the summer: Watt

The latest news is that he is to have surgery and will be out for three months: Long absence

Although he has insisted he is not thinking about his future until the season is over, Jordan Cousins is likely to leave, as is Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Ademola Lookman is expected to join a Premiership club.

Welcome back, Tony Watt

Tony Watt has sustained a groin injury at Blackburn Rovers. His loan has been terminated and he is returning to Charlton: Tony Watt

Presumably this means that the projected sale to Blackburn Rovers at the end of the season is off.

Watt: 'I never wanted to stay at Charlton'

Tony Watt says he never wanted to stay at Charlton. It was a 'beautiful club', but things happened behind the scenes he can't talk about: Tony Watt

Goodbye, Tony Watt

It looks as if Tony Watt is heading out on loan as a sale has not been possible: Watt? Watt?

Goodbye, and thanks for all you tried to do.

His departure is a bit at odds with what José Riga was saying last week, but then he's not in charge: Watt fully committed

It appears that Watt may be going to Blackburn Rovers who may have been impressed by him last Saturday.

Leeds may make new move for Tony Watt

According to reports from Yorkshire, Leeds United may make another move for Tony Watt. They thought they had managed to sign him in November, but Cardiff City got in first. Charlton will be keen to reduce the wage bill and make money from a sale.

Welcome back, Tony Watt

Cardiff City have been placed under a transfer embargo for breach of financial fair play rules, so Tony Watt will be returning to The Valley: Watt?

This will affect the budgetary calculations made by Roland, so it may have some knock on effects. Richard Cawley of the SLP has tweeted that it may mean raising funds with a different sale.

Who will go in January?

The Daily Mirror reports: 'The struggling Addicks, second-bottom in the Championship, want to raise at least £2m in January and prepared to sacrifice some of their stars to bring in some much-needed money. Though the Charlton board risk further angering their fans, who are already protesting against owner Roland Duchatelet and the current regime, with their fundraising plans.

They are desperate for striker Tony Watt’s loan move to Cardiff to become a permanent one, bringing in around £1m. Highest earner and winger Johann Gudmundsson, in-demand teenage starlet Ademola Lookman and striker Igor Vetokele are among those who could go too.

Charlton are bracing themselves for January bids for Lookman from Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea and could now cash in to ease their money worries. But the sale of the 18 year-old academy product in particular would be an especially controversial decision and crank up the animosity towards the board from Charlton fans.'

Charlton open to offers for Harriott

Charlton are open to offers for Callum Harriott after the mercurial winger's good loan spell at Colchester. Franck Moussa could also be on his way out, while Tony Watt is expected to sign a permanent deal at Cardiff: Departures

Richard Cawley of the SLP confirms that Roger Johnson, currently playing in the Indian Super League, is also in the club's sights: Roger Johnson

Unconfirmed reports from Belgium suggest that Sint Truiden are interested in Reza Ghoochanneljihad. Fans' opinions appear to be divided on this possible departure, but I think that at least he gives one hundred per cent and has shown signs of adapting to the rigours of the Championship.

Bluebirds want to sign Watt

Tony Watt: Chwedl Geltaid

Now that Tony Watt's loan deal with Cardiff City has been finalised, Wales Online have provided a portrait in words of the 'Celtic legend': Tony Watt

His loan runs until mid-January, but there have been some suggestions that it may be permanent.

Mixed reactions to the move from Charlton fans here: Good or bad?

Watt has now complained about 'false reasons' being given for his exit from Charlton: Unhappy player

Watt leaves for Cardiff

Tony Watt is to join Cardiff City on loan: Watt? Watt? Watt?

There have been unconfirmed reports that the Scottish striker is a disruptive influence in the dressing room.

He has also been reluctant to pass to other players when he has the ball, trying to do it all himself.

Nevertheless, the report is something of a shock and reduces Charlton's striker options again. One interpretation is that it is to do with the playing budget and the need to offset Vaz Te's wages.

At least one mystery is solved. Watt was seen with a phrase book at Birmingham on Saturday, but it turned out not to be 'How to speak Brummie' but 'First Steps in Welsh'.

Croeso i Gaerdydd

All the focus in Wales today will be on the egg chasing at Twickenham rather than the big match between Cardiff City and Charlton, but for the Addickted it is important. Spirits have plummeted after the two poor home performances, when we should taken at least four points and really six, the defeat at Blackburn and the battering at Crystal Palace.

Criticism of Guy Luzon is intensifying. On Palace in particular, I would say that this was a match we were never going to win. Like it or not (and I certainly don't) Palace are a successful Premiership side.

I have my own personal issue with Palace. My father-in-law, a resident of Thornton Heath, was a Palace supporter and when my late wife asked if she could go to a match with him, he told her that girls don't go to football. Fortunately, she started work in Woolwich and became even more Addickted than me, once going to away matches I couldn't attend when her foot was broken.

If we had put out a stronger side at Selhurst, the margin of defeat could have been lower but we would have risked even more injuries and suspensions. The list the Sparrows Lane tea lady gave me the other day includes those carrying an injury, but it is still worryingly long. It reflects the fact that the squad isn't big enough.

I find Welsh a very difficult language and I am full of admiration for a friend who has learnt it well enough to lecture in it. My two nephews are fluent speakers and for the one who has stayed on the farm it is the language of everyday life. In places like Gaerdydd and Abertawe (Swansea), teenagers who have learnt it at school speak it in front of their parents who don't understand it.

Our record against the Bluebirds is not bad as we have lost one of eight games since 2007 (and we all remember the 5-4 victory and, yes, I was there). Last year we won 2-1. However Cardiff have lost only one of their last six home games (to high flying Hull). All of our goals against Cardiff last season were scored after the 74th minute.

Cardiff are currently 8th in the table, while Charlton have slumped to 16th. Both clubs have somewhat weird owners (see the interview with Roland in the CAS Trust magazine).

If Tony Watt plays, he may extend his record as the players who has attempted most dribbles in the Championship (33). He should try passing to another Charlton player.

Odds: Cardiff 19/20, Draw 12/5, Charlton 10/3. Forecast 3-1 to Cardiff, Charlton score in the 84th minute.

Injury worries

Watt, Solly and Reza are out for Saturday, Reza's injury is long term. Chris Solly was really clattered by a Forest player towards the end of Tuesday's game, leaving him with an ankle problem.

Solly makes a major contribution, but he can be covered. Tony Watt is more of a worry, given his ability to score goals and his creativity. Guy Luzon won't want to play 4-5-1, but I have doubts about Ahearne-Grant. Makienok is turning into a scapegoat player for some supporters, but that is unfair after three matches, but leading the line would be a big ask.

Vetokele's injury is long-term and difficult to recover from, but Guy Luzon is saying he should be back soon.

Another tough test

The fixtures computer did not give Charlton an easy start to the season, but so far they have acquitted themselves well. Tonight they continue their tour of the East Midlands, where they have been staying since Saturday, taking on Nottingham Forest.

Tony Watt was exhausted at the end of the Derby game and a lot of the hopes for scoring goals or creating them rest on him, with some Addicks already expressing reservations about Simon Makienok. However, it should be remembered that both Cousins and Gudmundsson can score goals and the defence is looking solid.

Some reports suggest that Chris Solly's knee is giving concern and he may be rested.

The local paper thinks that the Addicks like to use the full width of the pitch and that a lot will depend on the performance of each side's wide men: A matter of width

Forest are currently under a transfer embargo, but managed to beat Rotherham 2-1 on Saturday. However, there seems to be a lot of dissatisfaction among their supporters.

The odds on Charlton being relegated have eased a little so that they are now fourth favourites. Odds for the match are: Forest Evens, Draw 9/4, Charlton 13/5.

Nottingham Forest have won only once in their past six games against the Addicks at the City Ground (drawn three, lost two). Charlton are unbeaten in their past four matches against the Reds, winning two and drawing two. Forest summer signing Jamie Ward has scored six goals in four appearances against Charlton.

Good away point for the Addicks

Charlton maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw at promotion favourites Derby County.

Watt and Ceballos came in for Ahearne-Grant and Ba at the IPro stadium this afternoon, despite fears that Watt might not be fully fit. Derby were playing 4-3-3.

An early Derby corner was well cleared by Jordan Cousins. Bauer put in a great challenge as Derby advanced.

Gudmundsson put in a shot, but it was well held by the keeper Scott Carson. Derby threatened, but Diarra cleared well at the expense of a corner. Makienok defended well from the corner. Solly was having a good game.

Fox blocked a Derby attack well as Charlton were under pressure on 15 minutes. An effort by Martin went harmlessly wide. Fox had to concede a corner.

Derby won a corner off Chris Solly, taken again by Ince. Diarra headed the ball away. Ceballos threatened from a good ball from Solly, but Carson did well to gather.

Pope commanded his area well as a decent ball came in. Cousins intercepted the ball well at the expense of another corner for Derby. Diarra headed the ball away well.

Makienok provided a good ball to Gudmundsson, but Derby defended well to deny Ceballos.

Fox won Charlton their first corner, but it went straight out of play. It had been a solid first half for Charlton.

HT: Rams 0, Addicks 0

Derby threatened in the first minute and Charlton conceded a corner. A right-footed effort by Tony Watt took a deflection and looped over Scott Carson to put Charlton ahead.

A header from Martin went straight into the arms of Pope.

Derby won a corner. Charlton managed to clear their lines, but Derby kept up the pressure. Fox made a great block. Bauer had to make a great clearance on the line.

A Charlton shot was deflected for a corner. The ball was cleared off the line from Diarra. The game was becoming end to end.

Charlton won another corner through Gudmundsson. Ceballos came off and Bergdich came on.

Bauer defended well from a corner. Kashi put in a good sliding tackle. A shot from Makienok was straight at Carson.

Derby took off Russell with 23 minutes left. A free kick was given against Fox. Cousins headed the ball away at the near post. After another soft free kick, Derby equalised through Martin.

From a corner, Makienok’s header went on to the roof of the net.

Fox made a good defensive header. He then defended well again. Bergdich and Bauer got yellow cards. Pope made a good save from the free kick at the expense of a corner, followed by a second. Makienok headed the ball away and Pope gathered.

Gudmundsson counter attacked and his shot was just wide of the post.

Derby won a corner with Ince causing problems down the right. Charlton counter attacked, but the effort failed. Derby got a free kick 25 yards out, Kashi getting a yellow card. Ince’s free kick went over the bar.

Derby brought on a more attacking right back in Christie. Makienok came off for birthday boy Johnnie Jackson who was making is 200th Charlton appearance. Four minutes were added on. Ba came on in place of Gudmundsson. Watt took the ball into the corner. Nick Pope had to make a great save at the expense of a corner which led to a second, then a third. Solly cleared it well. Valley Floyd Road rang out from the Addickted.

Ahearne-Grant buzzing after first goal

Karlan Ahearne-Grant reflects on his first goal for Charlton for the FA website: Ahearne-Grant

Voice of the Valley editor Rick Everitt normally leans towards the pessimistic tendency but has tweeted from his Ramsgate den: 'So impressed with Tony Watt in the first two games. New signings look encouraging, but Watt is the difference, as he was in the spring.'

Saturday's opponents Derby County lost 2-1 in the League Cup last night. One shouldn't read too much into that, although apparently they put a decent side out.

Good win for Charlton as Reza scores

It was an evening when some Championship sides were embarrassed. Brentford lost 0-4 at home to Oxford and Blackburn Rovers were defeated at home by Shrewsbury. Seven Championship sides were defeated, while elsewhere Barnet beat Millwall. However, Charlton secured a convincing 4-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge to go through to the second round of the League Cup.

The Addicks took the lead on 26 minutes when Tony Watt latched onto a Johnnie Jackson pass to fire the ball past Mark Cousins. Karlan Ahearne-Grant doubled their lead with his first Addicks goal before Zakaraya Bergdich scored on his Charlton debut to make it three. Christian Doidge put Dagenham back in it but Reza Ghoochannejhad scored a late goal to send Charlton through.

Watt turned provider as he sent the ball into the box for Bergdich to calmly finish.

Bauer and Serr were steady at the back. Nick Pope seemed vulnerable to any low shots fired straight at him. He nearly got caught out twice.

Attendance was 5,100.

South London Press report is here: Good win
