More signings depend on Faye exit

More signings for the Addicks depend on the departure of Amdy Faye, Alan Pardew has told the Daily Mail. Southend midfielder Nicky Bailey is still on his shopping list. He is transfer listed at Roots Hall where he has had a falling out with the Shrimpers.

Manager Pardew wants a decision on the Senegal midfielder's future this week but admitted that Stoke boss Tony Pulis will concentrate on checking out Faye's personality rather than his football skills.

Pardew said: 'Tony's shown a bit of cheek by taking him on trial but I just felt it was best for the lad, especially when he came on and got booed by the crowd here against Athletic Club (in pre-season). I think it's difficult for him here now. If he does come back to us then we're going to have to try to build bridges with everybody here.'

'Tony knows it's very important that his team spirit isn't broken and he needs to make sure that the player is of good character, which he is.'

Faye's departure would raise cash for new signings, and Pardew said: 'There are still going to have to be a couple of players going out. I'm itching to get a couple more players in but I'm just holding fire at the moment.'

The Mail added that a departure for Faye and more signings would boost house prices in SE7.

When will we confront the problem of midfield. It is not fair to put Shelvey in that position at his age

The midfield isn't the only issue. There are others. Shelvey isnt ready yet, for me it's clear. Although we were swamped on Saturday by Swansea's 5 midfielders. We may see better of him if the opposition play 4-4-2. He still looks uncomfortable at the moment but he's got plenty of time to mature and develop. I think Pardew should keep him in contention for now, so as not to damage his confidence. We can't complain about Saturday's result. I'm sure everybody would have gladly accepted a 2-0 win prior to kick off. I thought Racon showed promise and used the ball well. We looked better with Holland on the pitch. The midfield issue for me is more about the flank players. Thomas can be unplayable on his day, but that day dosn't happen often enough and he lacks a real midfield engine to support his full back in defence. Sam shows promise but too often does not deliver the cross Gray and Varney must be aching for. This can also be levelled as an issue with Thomas. I've got a feeling with Bouazza arriving Thomas could be on his way out. If there's an outside chance that ZZ stays, there's not alot wrong with central midfield. Pardew needs to re-examine what he truly gets out of his flank players. Criticism has been levelled at Gray about lack of goals etc but, if we play with 2 wide men they must beat their full back and deliver, it's as simple as that. The pair of them, easily beat full backs, but then want to do it again, no cross into the box! If we can coach these players to be more direct with their crossing opportunities Gray will score goals. The other option would be to play with one wide player and make us a bit more compact when defending. At the moment we're an average team but we can improve. Very early days yet. Hudson had one of the best debut's I've seen in recent years, so that was a massive 'big up' for us. Improvements are needed and we've got the time to do it. Keep the faith everyone, we might just be pleasantly surprised !
