Mooney heads for Valley

Reading after two Charlton players?
Reports have been received from somewhat unreliable sources that Reading have offered £800,000 + David Mooney for Bailey and Semedo. I don't treat these reports too seriously, but what would think of such an offer?
Bailey: I would be prepared to sell him, but I would hope for more than £800,000, but perhaps that is unrealistic in today's market.
Semedo: In my view one of our key players, any offer would have to reflect his worth.
Mooney: Not as bad as some fans make out, but he is a bit of a 'headless chicken' player, racing round the pitch after the ball to no great effect much of the time. Commitment is fine, but is there enough skill?

Charlton hit by injuries in 2-1 defeat
Reid was dropped to the bench and Racon and Semedo started while Burton partnered Akpo Sodje up front reports Paul May from the Memorial Ground in a stand that would normally be used at a gymkhana. Basey was struggling after a nasty challenge after fifteen seconds which caught him on the left leg and the culprit Dominic Blizzard received a yellow card. A stretcher was called for and he was taken off. Chris Solly came on to replace him.
Racon was hauled over leading to a free kick just outside the D. Bailey's effort went straight into the wall and Rovers were awarded a free kick for handball by the Charlton captain.
Rovers won the first corner of the evening. Campbell's effort curled out of play. An attack by Rovers put Charlton on the back foot and led to another corner. It was driven home at the far post by Rovers central defender Elliott. It was not well defended by Charlton.
Kuffour received a calf injury after a challenge by Racon and was replaced by Andy Williams. Andersen fumbled after a good shot on target by Bailey but was able to gather. Williams advanced as the Addicks defence tried to play offside and Elliot stood up well and blocked the attempt with his chest. Lines put in a shot but was tipped over by Elliot in a brilliant save. Campbell's corner created danger and then Rovers won a free kick 25 yards out. The effort by Lines went over the wall but was well gathered by Elliot from under the crossbar to prevent it going into the top corner.
Rovers won a corner kick off Dailly. Stuart Campbell was shown a yellow card after a foul on Sam. Referee Kettle had played advantage and after Akpo Sodje's effort was deflected, Charlton won their first corner. It was a free header and Akpo Sodje put it wide. The striker put his head in his hands.
Lines went to ground in the area, but the referee waved away the appeals to the indignation of the Rovers fans and their manager. Sam cut inside and put in a great cross but Bailey was unable to connect. Sam put in a decent cross, Bailey tried to advance and Akpo Sodje went down.
Sam Sodje had to clear off the line as Elliot could not deny Heffernan. It was good work by the centre back.
Charlton won a free kick for a handball by Lines in a good position, but it was unproductive. Five minutes of time were added on. An effort from Bailey when the keeper was out of position was just a yard wide. Bailey had been good, but Burton had been relatively anonymous. A drive by Racon led to a last minute consolation for Charlton, but the 100 minute plus game finally came to an end.
Charlton lacked creativity in the final third, but Solly deserves credit for his performance after coming on as a substitute.

Mooney here for the duration
The Addicks have completed the capture of David Mooney until the end of the season. The striker joined the Addicks on a temporary basis from Reading in October and his loan agreement was extended earlier this month, an arrangement that was due to run out in the middle of February.
However, Mooney will now stay at The Valley until the summer [including the play offs?] after a deal was reached this morning.
'Dave is staying until the end of the season,' Charlton supremo Phil Parkinson told the South London Press. 'He's enjoyed being here and he's done well here. Now he can concentrate on playing and scoring goals for us.'
I was initially impressed with Mooney, especially his pace and commitment, and it looked as if he could finish, but his most recent games have been poor. However, I understand that he is to receive special instruction on the offside rule and a barn door used by some earlier Charlton strikers in training has been brought out of store at Sparrows Lane.
Mooney or McKenzie to start against Tranmere? Discuss.

Wonder goal from Wagstaff
A start for Frazer Richardson was the only change made by Phil Parkinson in the line up for the match against Hartlepool reports Philippa Nicholson from The Valley. Parky called for a professional approach to the game in the programme. There were about sixty or seventy away fans in the Jimmy Seed Stand on a chilly night with a cold wind.
Charlton started well and won a corner within the first minute, unsettling the youthful Hartlepool side. Basey's corner was well taken, but did not lead to anything. Hartlepool staged their first attack of the game which did momentarily pose a threat with Basey not coping too well.
Semedo broke up another Hartlepool attack following a free kick. Sweeney threatened, the Addicks launched a counter attack, but Burton's long range effort was easily gathered by former Glazier Scott Flinders in the visitors' goal. It was a lively start from both teams.
Dailly unusually put in a poor pass, but Charlton recovered through Bailey. Hartlepool had settled down and were clearly not there to make up the numbers. Charlton won a second corner after a cross from Richardson was deflected. Flinders claimed the ball well after Burton had headed it into the air under pressure.
Llera put in a good long ball, Mooney headed down well, Burton hesitated and the ball went behind for a corner taken again by Basey. Burton jumped too early and the ball went behind for a goal kick.
Elliot comfortably gathered a cross from Monkhouse. Sam evaded Monkhouse but Shelvey's cross went out of play after Hartlepool had been opened up. Richardson half cleared a Hartlepool free kick and further pressure was applied by the visitors.
Llera had to clear away a cross with Larkin behind him giving Hartlepool their first corner. The corner was not taken well, but the ball came back in and Llera made a complete mess of the clearance. Fortunately, Dailly was fouled, giving the Addicks a free kick. The Charlton defence was at panic stations, an all too familiar scenario.
Basey fed Burton but the striker's touch was poor and the ball went out for a throw in. Richardson tried to turn provider for Burton whose position was good but he headed wide. Elliot claimed well under pressure following a Hartlepool free kick.
Sam lost control of the ball to the despair of the Addickted.
Parky was trying to get the Addicks to calm down and take the pace out of the game. The midfield did not seem to be at its best. Word came through that Leeds had gone behind at home to Carlisle in the JPT. Charlton did not deal well with a clearance, but won a free kick.
Charlton did threaten for a moment, but the visitors were able to clear. Sam burst into the penalty area, but his effort and a follow up by Mooney were blocked. Sam evaded two players, Shelvey rose and his effort went over the crossbar.

The ball was whipped in well from the left by Basey and with half an hour played Mooney put the ball into the net to make it 1-0 with an excellent finish. The goal came just as the Addickted were started to get frustrated. The referee went over to the bench to rebuke Kinsella for encroachment and he withdrew from the technical area to the bench.
Hartlepool threatened, but Basey saw the danger and put the ball out for a throw. The visitors had their best chance, but Elliot was able to gather the shot from Humphreys. Larkin threatened but Basey challenged well in the box. Another effort from Humphreys went well over the crossbar.

Charlton won a free kick on the wing after Semedo was fouled, but Basey's effort was headed away. Hartlepool made a late attack, Richardson dealt with it well after Elliot hesitated and Nicky Bailey needed some treatment after a tackle from behind which the referee did not see.
One minute of time was added on. A very long throw came in and in the subsequent play Bailey was the subject of a rough challenge and Behan was booked.

Immediately after coming on, he won a free kick. Sam put in a good cross, Bailey tried a snap shot which looked as if it might head for the top corner but it went inches wide.
Mooney's first touch was poor and Flinders was able to gather. Flinders managed to defend an effort from Sam at the expense of a corner. Sam was taken off and Dickson came on. Mooney was replaced by Wagstaff. Basey's corner was punched away. Hartlepool won an offside decision with a late flag which angered the nearby Addickted.
Behan was replaced by Boyd for Hartlepool. The departing striker took his time in leaving the pitch. Hartlepool were start to time waste and the referee needed to get a grip. Wagstaff shot from 25 yards and the super sub scored. What a brilliant strike into the top corner!
Humphreys was taken off and replaced by Jones for the visitors. Charlton were keeping possesion well and put in some nice passes with Semedo looking impressive. The flag went up against Dickson. Charlton won another corner through great work by Wagstaff.

It's done deal at Upton Park
A deal from David Gold and David Sullivan to take over West Ham is about to be announced so that particular lifeline for Charlton has disappeared. Some fans had reservations about them anyway on various grounds. It looks as if we shall just have to soldier on making the best use we can of our own resources and hoping we can get promoted. If we do go up through the play offs, at least it will generate some extra revenue.
Turning to tonight's game it's another one I shall have to miss, as I can't really leave work in time to get to the ground and then I have the problem of getting back. I was hoping that League 1 would mean more Saturday games, but the Leyton Orient game has also been rescheduled, although at least that will give us some much needed Sky TV revenue. On Sunday I saw top team Coventry Blaze struggle to beat bottom team Hull Stingrays (and they are bottom feeders for a reason) in the Elite ice hockey league. With nothing to lose, the Stingrays were playing out of their skins and the pressure was on Blaze to hang on to their narrow lead at the top of the league over Nottingham Panthers who are the big boys of British ice hockey with their huge rink and big crowds. Hartlepool tonight will want to overcome the memory of a 0-5 home drubbing last Saturday.
I would expect Parky to start with much the same team on Saturday, except that Frazer Richardson will start to give some oomph that is not provided by the adequate Omozusi. Unfortunately, it looks as if we will still be without Kelly Youga and Grant Basey is simply not of the same class and indeed can be error prone (more so than Youga).
Mooney did not look at his sharpest on Saturday and might have scored a couple of times but didn't, but he was returning from injury. On reflection, I think that McKenzie probably played better when he came on than I had first thought. Burton was a bit subdued.
However, the real star of the game was Nicky Bailey who is showing real maturity in the captain's role. Parky has made it clear that he is staying at The Valley, dashing the hopes of 'Boro fans who thought that he was a good prospect with the bonus of ginger hair that would complement that of their new manager.
Apparently some fans do not realise that the game is being played tonight, but if you are going, enjoy the game!

With nothing to lose, the Stingrays were playing out of their skins and the pressure was on Blaze to hang on to their narrow lead at the top of the league over Nottingham Panthers who are the big boys of British ice hockey with their huge rink and big crowds. Hartlepool tonight will want to overcome the memory of a 0-5 home drubbing last Saturday.
I would expect Parky to start with much the same team on Saturday, except that Frazer Richardson will start to give some oomph that is not provided by the adequate Omozusi. Unfortunately, it looks as if we will still be without Kelly Youga and Grant Basey is simply not of the same class and indeed can be error prone (more so than Youga).
Mooney did not look at his sharpest on Saturday and might have scored a couple of times but didn't, but he was returning from injury. On reflection, I think that McKenzie probably played better when he came on than I had first thought. Burton was a bit subdued.
However, the real star of the game was Nicky Bailey who is showing real maturity in the captain's role. Parky has made it clear that he is staying at The Valley, dashing the hopes of 'Boro fans who thought that he was a good prospect with the bonus of ginger hair that would complement that of their new manager.
Apparently some fans do not realise that the game is being played tonight, but if you are going, enjoy the game!

Mooney in for rest of season?
Unconfirmed reports are suggesting that David Mooney has joined Charlton on loan for the rest of the season. Certainly, talks with Reading have been taking place.
Before his injury, many of the Addickted had been impressed by Mooney's work rate and his eye for goal. He also formed a good partnership with Deon Burton.
Izale McLeod's departure for Peterborough has been confirmed, but his first destination will not be the East of England cathedral city but a training camp in Teneriffe which sounds a better deal than going north of the border. And, who knows, the kilt he was measured for may yet come in handy.
Of the other strikers, Leon McKenzie could be used as an attacking left-winger in my view. Chris Dickson will serve as injury cover and someone who can be brought on as a substitute. Tamer Tuna has gone off for work experience with the Staines massive.

Four goal Charlton secure three points
Miguel Llera came in for the suspended Sam Sodje with Jonjo Shelvey replacing Thierry Racon in midfield for the clash with Bristol Rovers, reports Philippa Nicholson from The Valley. Conditions were blustery.
Charlton applied early pressure, but a foul was awarded against Youga. The pressure was maintained and a little after three minutes Mooney scored for the Addicks. To create the goal Semedo had fed Sam, Burton became involved, Andersen - the keeper on loan - palmed the shot away but Mooney was there waiting to pounce.
The Addicks were unable to take advantage of a free kick which was cleared. Rovers advanced but Semedo cleared. A cross from Sam was put out of play by Anthony for Charlton's first corner of the evening. The referee had warned Rovers players to cut out their trouble making, Basey's corner came in, Llera was bundled over and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Burton converted well, sending the keeper the wrong way, to put the Addicks 2-0 ahead.
The Addicks launched another attack but Mooney's effort went into the arms of the keeper. Mooney went in behind the back line, but Anthony was able to scoop the ball away. As Charlton kept up the pressure, they won another corner, but Rovers were able to partially clear.
Youga went down and was hobbling after treatment. Rovers won a corner, but Charlton won a free kick. Youga had to be taken off which was a shame given how well he had combined with Sam. Omosuzi replaced Youga. After just four minutes on the pitch Omosuzi managed to get himself booked. The free kick was dealt with well by Ikeme.
A foul on Omosuzi by Campbell won Charlton a free kick. Basey's effort was over hit went out of play for a Rovers goal kick. A Rovers free kick was drifting goalwards, but Ikeme was alert and tipped the ball away for a corner from which Sam broke from a Shelvey clearance, but he was unable to combine with Mooney.
Semedo was fouled by Hughes and Charlton were awarded a free kick, but Basey's effort was unproductive. Sam put in a great cross, Shelvey's shot hit Mooney and Andersen was able to make the save.
Rovers were awarded a penalty for some scuffling in the area after a rare attack in which Kuffour was manhandled and Dailly was shown a yellow card, although Llera seemed to be involved. Hughes made it 2-1 by beating Ikeme five minutes before the break.

Team answer moaners
Charlton gave a convincing answer to the moaners today by thumping third placed Milton Keynes Dons 5-1 at The Valley. I did not take notes as usual, but I felt that a victory on that scale justified temporarily ending the suspension of this blog.
After gifting MK Dons an early goal, the Addicks fought back with skill and determination, although the strong wind blowing agsinst them made their task difficult in the first half. Their passing was fluent and each of the goals was well taken. There could well have been more but for the Dons keeper.
Much reading off of the recent form of the two teams has taken place in the last few days, leading to predictions of an away win despite Charlton's strong form at The Valley. Paradoxically, this may have helped us as Dons gave the impression that they thought this would be an easy three points. Those who favour Paul Ince as a manager might reflect on their frequent resort to fouling and arguing with the referee. Might this be a tradition carried over from Manchester United? No one wonder the yellow card was flourished regularly against them.
There's a reluctance to give Parky credit for anything that goes right but playing Mooney up front with Burton worked well, as did having Bailey in the centre and Racon on the wing.
Charlton consolidated their second place in the league, and are now three points ahead of MK Dons and Colchester who drew at home against Exeter, but still lag behind in the much vaunted form table.
It was interesting to read how the negativists have attempted to construct a narrative about this result. It has been pointed out that it is only one result and that is true. Nevertheless, it was important to beat one of the other automatic promotion claimants convincingly and Parkinson must have got something right to have us three points clear in 2nd place.
Another view is that we were lucky and the match could have easily gone the other way. If it hadn't been for Youga's clearance off the line and Dailly's apparent handball, we could have gone 0-2 behind and it would have been a very different story. The referee thought that Dailly was pushed and it was a change to have a referee who didn't feel that he had to prove that he wasn't a 'homer' by giving every marginal decision to the opposition.
Match analysis
Ivy the Terrible has awarded the Silver Bone to David Mooney who remarked this was something they did not have at Reading. He made a difference up front showing pace, skill and determination. Phil Parkinson's most controversial selection was Carl Ikeme. Many Addicks feel that a former Academy player should always be given the nod over a loan player. But Parky sees Randolph in training every week and knows about his attitude. Ikeme was off his line for the MK goal, but made one good save. Sodje had a good game and took his goal well. Dailly was reliable as ever, even if he did have to use his hand at one crucial point. Youga was not at his best, but made a vital clearance off the line. Richardson was at fault for the first goal and eventually had to be withdrawn. I did wonder if he was one hundred per cent fit. Semedo was a little subdued and not at his very best. Bailey had a much improved match and although his goal was straightforward, it was well taken. Sam had a good game, rarely lasting all 90 minutes. I thought that his goal was the best in the match and should be considered for goal of the season. He also provided two assists. Racon was more effective in his new position. Burton had some nice touches and took his goal well. Basey showed that he is a reliable and competent substitute when he came on. McKenize showed again that he can cause the opposition trouble. The loan signing of Sodje Major caused some controversy among fans before the game. But loan signings are the name of the game at this level. He looked very strong and had good pace. This is all part of the preparation for Burton's op.
Juneau the Soccer Cat gave the Hiss of the Match to MK Dons captain Aaron Wilbraham. He was constantly arguing with the referee, all the way to the tunnel at half time. He was lucky not to get booked. Juneau wishes to point out that her name is not Juno. As an all American cat, she is named after the capital of Alaska, although she is not a fan of Sarah Palin and her own home state is, of course, Maine.

Mooney signed on emergency loan
Reading striker David Mooney has been signed on emergency loan after Leon McKenize encountered problems in training. It means that we could start with a 4-4-2 tomorrow, but more likely Mooney will be on the bench.
The 25-year old Irishman is a big lad, 6ft. 2 ins. high. He signed for Reading from Cork City in the summer of 2008. He was Irish player of the year in 2007 after being the top scorer in their league so he knows where the back of the net is.
