Kyel Reid could make an early return to The Valley if Scunthorpe succeed in their attempt to secure his services. However, the free agent has impressed at his trial with Barnsley so he is likely to settle for whoever can offer him the best package.
Both clubs are clearly impressed by pace and not too worried about the quality of the final ball.
On another subject altogether, today is the birthday of Charlton legend Eddie Firmani. He will be 88 and celebrating in Naples, Florida.

Kyel Reid released
Pravda is reporting that Kyel Reid is being released by the Addicks. Views differ about him (as always) but my view is that he promised more than he delivered. He had pace and could penetrate opposition defences, but the final product was often disappointing. Towards the end of his stay it was apparent that he was becoming increasingly disllusioned at Charlton.
Ross Worner has been released, emphasising the need to bring in Sullivan who has been released by Millwall. Mambo has been retained, which is encouraging news, but one time white hope Tamer Tuna is on his way.
This decision is not a great surprise given the level that he has been playing at in the non-league. He had pace, but the question is whether he had much else.
Nevertheless, an issue remains about whether the development path for Academy youngsters is as good as it was without a reserve side. But I suppose one has to balance the cost of that against bringing in another player.

Job done: Charlton through
Charlton started at The Valley against Barnet with a 4-3-3 formation reports Philippa Nicholson. With Anyinsah injured with a groin problem and Martin ineligible, Abbott started up front supported by Reid and Wagstaff. Semedo was getting his suspension out of the way and McCormack appeared in the middle of the park, while Doherty was replaced by Fortune. 16-year old Harriot was on the bench.
Izale McLeod was on the bench for the visitors, while Grant Basey was playing for Barnet in central defence.
Barnet won an early free kick and Francomb's effort went over the wall with Elliot having to stretch to put the ball out for a corner which was cleared at the near post by Jackson. The Bees then followed with an effort which hit the woodwork before going out for a throw in.
Jackson took the first Charlton corner, Dailly put in a header, but the keeper got there first.
Reid put in a powerful effort from the edge of the 'D' with his left foot, but it went over the crossbar into the 250 or so Bees fans in the Jimmy Seed stand.
Reid advanced again, but he was blocked by Uddin. Basey put the ball out for a Charlton throw in and received ironic cheers. Wagstaff made a run down the right and he put a ball into Abbott. A shove by Kabba was ignored by the referee.
Reid advanced down the right, shrugged off Devera covering as left back, cut inside and placed the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0 on 18 minutes.
Barnet won a free kick and the referee had a chat with Francis. Francomb's free kick led to a corner. Wagstaff cleared at the near post. Reid advanced, but Marshall raced back to deal with the threat.
Racon conceded a corner. Marshall took the corner and got the ball back. Charlton cleared, but Barnet kept possession. Elliot made a good save under pressure. Kabba had a chance, but Dailly blocked well.
Charlton won a corner after Abbott advanced. Barnet dealt well with Jackson's ball.
The referee booked Barnet's Mark Hughes, presumably for dissent as he was away from the action.
McCormack gave the ball to Jackson who drew a great save from former QPR shot stopper Cole in the Barnet goal. Barnet mounted a late attack and Elliot had to come off his line to smother the ball.
One minute of time was added on, Kabba tried a shot from distance and Elliot punched it away at the expense of a corner. The corner came in and Basey nearly put it in at the near post, leading to a second corner as Charlton cleared.
Half time: Addicks 1, Bees 0
Benson was brought on after half-time in place of Wagstaff as Charlton switched to a 4-4-2. After an initially clear start to the evening, the rain came down, producing a slippery surface.
Barnet won a corner as their fans called for something more. Barnet took another corner very quickly, Marshall's effort went all the way across the six yard box, but the move ended in a goal kick. Jarvis had an attempt from a good position, but Elliot made himself big pushed it away for a throw in.
Kabba went down and made a meal of it, the idiots from North London called for a red, but Dailly received a yellow. The free kick was almost touched in by Francis for an own goal, but Elliot was alert and touched it away for a corner.
The Bees received a free kick to the left hand side of the 'D'. The Charlton wall was pushed back by referee Wright. The effort from Basey went over the wall and Elliot made a finger tip save over the bar. The corner was cleared.
Gallen was stopped by Fortune. Jarvis was taken off and forward Ricky Holmes was brought on. It wasn't clear what Jarvis had done wrong.
Fry intercepted well just outside the penalty area. Fortune was taken off and Doherty came on. Abbott and Benson combined well, but Uddin took the ball away as the 20th minute of the half approached.
Barnet won a free kick taken by Basey. It went out of play for a Charlton goal kick to ironic cheers. Kabba had an attempt from distance which went wide. The referee took exception to something that Doherty said and produced a yellow card.
Benson advanced well, could have been selfish but turned provider for Abbott who just played the ball into the hands of the keeper. Matt Fry received a yellow card for what was supposed to be a foul.
McCormack advanced, he had a number of options in support, but he lifted it well over the bar. Abbott, who had been disappointing, was withdrawn and Akpo Sodje came on to partner Benson.
Kabba got past Dailly, but Fry mopped up. Reid went down, holding his left knee. It looked as if it was cramp and received treatment off the pitch. A shot by Marshall was blocked by Doherty.
Boos rang out as £1.1m player Izale McLeod came on to replace the veteran Gallen up front. An effort by Sodje went wide.
Basey controlled the ball with his hand, leading to a Charlton free kick. McLeod advanced, but Elliot was there to push the ball away at the near post at the expense of a corner. Doherty had to clear frantically more than once.
Kabba came off and was replaced by Charlie Stimson, previously at the Gills. Stimson put the ball out for a Charlton throw in.
Four minutes were added on, goodness knows where they came from. Francis turned provider for Sodje who made a good effort from just outside the 'D' but it went over into the empty Covered End. Jackson went down with cramp.
The whistle was blown and the bulk of the 4,803 crowd were satisfied to see the Addicks go through to the 2nd round.

Charlton brush off Swindon
York: Charlton brushed aside Swindon with a 3-0 win at the County Ground yesterday evening. With Benson the provider, Jackson put Charlton ahead in the 13th minute. With half an hour gone, Charlton have two-thirds of the possession. As half time approached, the Addicks were still ahead and were still getting 60 per cent of the possession.
Ayinsah settled the outcome on the 51st minute when he made use of a cross from Fry. On 73 minutes Wagstaff put in a cross which was headed in at the far post by Benson.
Interesting to see Kyel Reid on the bench to replace the suspended Lee Martin. A much quicker come back than I had hoped for.
An emergency meeting of the Parkinson Must Go caucs was convened in the car park after the game. One grim faced moaner joining the group commented, 'What is the point of supporting Charlton if they don't give me something to complain about?
A spokesman said afterwards: 'This result has to be seen in context. Charlton are still only 5th and that is simply not good enough. One of the automatic promotion places has already been booked by Brighton. What happened tonight is all down to the players on the pitch and nothing to do with the inept manager.'

Reid backs Parky
Apparently the Daily Star is reporting that Phil Parkinson has two more games to prove himself at Charlton. Far be it from me to suggest that this was made up by a journo with space to fill.
Meanwhile, Kyel Reid insists that the players are to blame for last Saturday's night. As for Parky, Reidy insists that he is one of the best gaffers he has worked under and all the players love him: Parky

Charlton win in the paint pot
Phil Parkinson put out a strong side against MK Dons in the paint drying trophy last night and was rewarded with a 2-1 victory. The major change was the return of Christian Dailly in place of Jon Fortune, but Fortune came on in place of Doherty after the break. Benson was on the bench with Martin starting up front with Abbott.
The franchisees took the lead after just two minutes, Luke Chadwick making use of a cross from Lewis Guy. At half time some moaners stopped listening to the game, declaring it an 'embarrassment'.
Charlton equalised after the break when Luke Howell lost his footing and allowed Kyel Reid to cross for Pawel Abbott who headed home. Those who were there agreed that Abbott had quite a good game but Racon was less impressive although he showed some nice touches.
Reid turned provider again when he found leading scorer Scott Wagstaff unmarked at the post and he knocked it in to give Charlton the victory. This is the fourth game in the row when Reid has created a goal scoring opportunity and emphasises that he should start when fit. He is the most creative midfield player we have now that Bailey and Sam have left, albeit the first of these players was petulant and the second inconsistent (before we get too nostalgic about them).
Phil Parkinson's critics have said that the result does not change their view of him which is fair enough as my assessment would not be affected one way or another by what happens in this competition. They would be more impressed by a win at Plymouth which is far more important.
However, the victory has taken a little of the momentum out of the 'Parkinson must go' campaign which is not going to succeed during the season.

10 man Charlton defeat 12 man Bournemouth
10 man Charlton defeated 12 man Bournemouth 1-0 at The Valley this afternoon despite the best efforts of referee Grant Hegley. The unjustified sending off of Jose Semedo changed the match and prevented the Addicks securing a decisive victory, but they held out to win all three points.
I arrived at the Rose of Denmark to see two ambulances and a police car in attendance. Apparently there had been a three car crash and the instigator had made off. When Argyle went 1-0 ahead at Southampton, there was a great cheer and chants of 'Green Army' in an appropriate accent. The final result was greeted with a loud chant of 'You're going to be sacked in the morning.'
Charlton started brightly and got a free kick just to the left of the D, but it came off the wall. Our first corner was taken by Jackson, as I think they all were, and I am not sure he is the answer in this role. The effort was caught by the keeper.
Reid was doing some great work and it was a cross from him that produced our goal from Sodje. Charm merchant Arter who had been declaring that he was coming to The Valley bent on revenge received a yellow card.
I felt that after the goal things went a little flat and the play started to become more scrappy. Bournemouth were starting to be more physical. Reid won Charlton a corner later in the half, but it was unproductive.
Half time: Addicks 1, Cherries 0
Arter did not re-appear after the break and was replaced by Michael Symes. Bournemouth were awarded a dubious free kick by the referee and it required good defensive work by Chris Solly to ensure that it was nothing more than a corner. The Cherries had a penalty appeal, but the referee deemed that it was just outside the area and it led to a Charlton goal kick. Ironically, the Bournemouth fans had been chanting 'You don't what you're doing' at the referee.
Reid broke away well, but should have passed the ball to create a real opportunity. Semedo was sent off for what looked like a reasonable challenge and 50/50 on the ball. The Portugeezer looked as if he was in tears as he left the pitch but was given warm cheers by the Addickted. I understand that the club is going to appeal and so they should.
After that it was really a question of hanging on to the lead and Charlton kept pressing forward well, Akpo Sodje winning a corner. Throughout the game Bournemouth's attempts on goal never really looked that threatening and they will have to raise their game if they are not going to go straight down again.
The referee looked as if he was itching to give Elliot a card for time wasting and added five minutes of time on. It looked as if he was going to operate on a 'play until you score' basis, but eventually he blew his whistle. Incidentally, it is at times like this that I miss the clock on the big screen. Even at Leamington we have a screen with the score and time elapsed.
A cynic might argue that the referee had been promised an all expenses paid weekend in Bournemouth, but no doubt he felt he was being scrupulously fair and is probably one of those referees who leans in the direction of the away team to avoid being a 'homer'. However, I don't pay to watch the referee.
I looked for our goal on Sky Sports News, but although even the thrilling 0-0 draw between Rochdale and Hartlepool was featured, there was nothing from The Valley.
Match analysis
Visiting match analyst Homer the Cherry Hound has awarded the first Silver Bone of the new season to Kyel Reid. He created the first goal and his pace always created problems for the Cherries. Elliot improved as the game went on. His kicking out was a little suspect in the first half and he failed to command his area, but in the second half he came out more and made one great block with his hands towards the end. Our centre halves look like a great pairing, Dailly was once again Mr Reliable and Doherty made good use of his head. Jackson slotted competently into the left back role. Solly looked a bit lightweight in the first half, but improved in the second, often outwitting the Cherries, admittedly not the most difficult challenge he will face this season. Semedo was excellent and one realised how good he is after he was sent off for a foul that should have been a yellow. McCormack fed Reid to create the goal, but I am still uncertain about him, although I made a note of some good work by him early in the match. Wagstaff may have been a super sub, but he looked less comfortable starting and we often seemed to be weaker on the right. Abbott didn't make that big an impression on me, but it's early days. Sodje at least showed he can score goals, but when we went to 4-5-1 after the sending off, he looked ineffective. Racon looked polished when he came on and made some nice moves. Martin has certainly got pace and showed a willingness to get stuck in. Francis is a big lad and looks as if he can do the business.
Hiss of the Match This was given by Juneau the Soocer Cat to Grant Hegley but she enlisted her sister Amber to give one to the East Stand linesman for his odd decisions.
Crowd rating The attendance was 16,236 but that included many season ticket holders still on holiday. Those that were there were in good voice. 8/10.

More good news
Kyel Reid is about to sign for the Addicks on a permanent deal: Reid
Given the choice of Lloyd Sam or Kyel Reid, I would go for Reid.

Big build up in Leeds
There's a big build up in Leeds for tomorrow's match at The Valley. If you go here you can read the forecasts of Leeds fans, meet referee Lee Probert, and learn about danger man Nicky Bailey and his feared accomplice Deon Burton.
One piece of good news ahead of the match is that Sam Sodje has recovered from his knee injury and is available to face his former club. I have no particular recommendations on selections, except to say that I think that there is a case for starting Kyel Reid for his attacking threat. Given that we need Semedo, Racon may have to retreat to the bench.
I would also keep Darren Randolph in goal, notwithstanding that Elliot once seemed to be an inevitable first choice.
Although winning tomorrow would help Millwall, I would rather face a somewhat faltering Leeds in the play offs. I think that they would lose it if they have to go through the play offs again.
Having said that, I am not particularly optimistic about the match. Our defence has become more solid and we have a midfield that is capable of sparkling. The problem is up front, notwithstanding the worthy efforts of Burton and Forster. One is never clear where the goals are going to come from and there is always the chance of conceding.
The consensus among the Leeds 'jury' is 1-2 to them and they may well be right. I think it will be 1-1 until the 96th minute when Leeds will score the winner.

Half full or half empty?
Yesterday's draw at Exeter secured Charlton a place in the play offs, but securing an automatic promotion place would now depend on a very unlikely combination of results. I had given up on an automatic promotion place some time ago and at the beginning of the season I thought we might just make the play offs. So, on the whole, I am reasonably satisfied with what we have achieved.
As for the play offs themselves, I think that we could see off Swindon who showed once again yesterday against relegation strugglers Wycombe that they are not invincible. Huddersfield are a physical side with some very big cloggers and can tear apart lesser sides, but I think that we are solid enough to deal with them.
Getting to the final would at least help with the club's financial problems. But who would we prefer to meet there? We have conceded eight goals against the Spanners this year and there would be a particular humiliation in being denied promotion by them.
Leeds United are also a very unpleasant side, but they might fall apart if they once again found themselves in the play offs. We will, of course, have a dress rehearsal for any final against them next week.
As for the match against Exeter, the home side had more of the possession with a 54-46 split. We had seven shots on target to four. We had nine corners to three, but once again they were unproductive.
One Devonian Addick who was there commented, 'Pretty even match, probably fair result. We hit the woodwork twice, Llera did well with one of them from a free kick just outside the box, they hit it once. Reid made a big impact on opening their defence to create chances.'
'Their fans were poor and spent most of the time slagging off the ref. but we were abysmal in our support, simply no getting behind the team. Although I think the result was about right, we were also robbed of a goal about 5 from the end, how the ref and lino failed to see the handball on the line I have no idea.'
Another Addick commented, 'Reid certainly made a big impact. And one does have to ask why Parky insists on playing the largely anonymous (and that's being generous) Racon in the centre and pushing Bailey out left. When Racon was finally, mercifully, pulled off (just after his awful gaffe led to the series of events which led to their goal) and Bailey moved into the centre and Reid was playing out wide left we suddenly had urgency and punch. I find it unbelievable that Parky can't see that Semedo and Racon in centre midfield means that we have absolute no attacks emanating from there.'
Steve from Sidcup is always very doubtful about Racon. I can never make my mind up whether he is just a showboater or whether he really does add something to the side.

Charlton's attacking style will lead to defeat
Exeter City think that Charlton will go all out for three points on Saturday and that this is easier for the home side than a team that adopts a defensive stance. Hence, the Grecians are confident that the three points are theirs: Grecians
I would be more concerned about us taking a 1-0 lead and then trying to defend it and conceding at least an equaliser. However, although all our recent matches have been decided by one goal, I am going to stick my neck out and go for a 2-0 Addicks win tomorrow.
Charlton do have a number of injury worries ahead of the match. Kyel Reid has an ankle problem and has not been training and can be ruled out. Both Sodjes have problems that are likely to meant they are left out so that means Llera in central defence and Burton partnering Forster up front. Of the injury worries, Nicky Bailey is most likely to take part, although his trapped nerve problem has made it difficult for him to sleep at night.

Underwhelming
I took an American guest to see the Brakes in 2-0 against Bedford Town yesterday and maintain their 4th spot in the table and then to the Skydome to see Coventry Blaze win 4-3 in an exciting game against Cardiff Devils which maintained their top place in the table. So I didn't follow the Charlton game apart from getting the result. When I read the posts on the Glynne Jones list this morning, two points were noticeable: first, there were relatively few posts, as is usually the case when we win as it is harder to moan (although some always succeed); second, the impression was of an underwhelming performance.
Well, you have to beat who is in front of you and Charlton narrowed the gap on Leeds who look anything but invicible. There has been a lot of talking up of our play-off rivals in recent weeks, but Huddersfield lost at Gillingham; the Spanners could only manage a draw at Walsall; and Swindon, supposedly the on form team, were beaten 4-0 at home by rivals Bristol Rovers. Colchester play on Monday and Norwich look as if they are powering away to the title.
When I looked at the stats, I saw that we only had 52 per cent of the possession and had just two goal attemps on target, although we led goal attempts by 10 to 7. But perhaps what summed those was an effort by substitute Deon Burton whose headed effort from just inside the box went over the goal.
It's a concern that Jackson had to be taken off, apparently with a hamstring injury. Let's hope we don't have yet another left back crisis. Richardson was below his best, but may be carrying an injury and that may also help to explain what was apparently a disappointing performance by Sam.
Looking for positives, Reid is clearer getting fitter and sharper and it was his cross that created the first goal obligingly scored by Owen Goal. Akpo Sodje gets a lot of stick, but he has now scored five goals in seven starts.

Reid wins game for Charlton in time added on
With Deon Burton out injured, Akpo Sodje and David Mooney combine for the Addicks for the first time at Roots Hall tonight reports Paul May. Semedo comes backing into the starting line up at the expense of Kyel Reid and local hero Nicky Bailey moves out to the left once again.
Bailey opened the action with a great cross, but Sam was unable to connect. Racon lost possession with a showboating back heeled flick and Southend won a free kick. Vernon headed the free kick back across the six yard box, but Vernon managed to clear. Richardson put in a good ball, but Mildenhall claimed for Southend.
Neither side was really dominant in a rather scrappy opening phase of play. A good effort by Bailey from just outside the box on his right foot was well saved by Mildenhall to give Charlton the first corner of the game. Southend won a free kick after a challenge by Llera.
Sam made a great run, but a much needed tackle came in from Southend. Elliot had to make a brilliant save after diving to the right to scoop the ball round the post. Southend kept up the pressure after the corner. Mooney went off to have his boots changed, the pitch having proved slippery.
Southend were given a free kick in the D, Bailey went down holding his neck and rolling around and Christophe was given a red card for violent conduct. Bailey got a yellow card for his foul. The free kick was a good one by Francis but Elliot made another fantastic save. There was a scramble in the six yard box after the corner.
A long range drive came in from 35 yards from Paterson and Elliot spilled the ball to concede. Llera and Dailly both went for the same ball. Sam received the ball in a one-two from Mooney but he failed to beat the keeper.
Southend won a corner kick, but Charlton were awarded a free kick for a push. A Charlton corner was unproductive. A shot by Sam was not that strong. Arsenal loanee Sanchez Watt was given a yellow card by the referee.
Three minutes were added on. Charlton won a late corner after work by Sam and Mooney. Southend broke, but Richardson made an excellent interception and Southend won a corner kick.

Paterson made a nasty challenge on Elliot. Bailey put in a cross but Mildenhall was able to intercept at the expense of a corner. The ball went over the goal. Paterson came off. The home side were playing deeper.
Charlton won another corner, but it was unproductive. Sam fluffed a cross. Reid came on. Richardson sent a cross in, Mooney stretched, but it was straight at the keeper. Reid won a corner kick, but Southend cleared.
An effort by Reid was saved by Mildenhall to his right. Racon turned provider for Mooney, but his relatively weak shot was blocked on the line by Baldwin on the floor.
Mooney tried for goal but it went just over. Mooney was caught offside.
Barrett defended on the line as Charlton threatened following good work by Kyel Reid.
Southend won a corner. Bailey provided a good ball across to the left-hand side to Reid and Akpo Sodje slid the ball into the net. Mooney was replaced by McKenzie.
Racon conceded a free kick 22 yards out which was very well struck by Francis. Elliot made a double save after the ball hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced to the edge of the six yard box and the keeper made the save. Sam won a corner kick but it was denied by the linesman.
Another corner kick was signalled as a goal kick. At last Charlton were given a corner kick, but it was unproductive. A long range drive from Bailey went wide. Wagstaff was brought on. Elliot had to save off Francis at the second attempt.
Southend won a corner kick. Six minutes of time were added on. Reid accelerated, composed himself for his shot and drilled in a beautiful finish from a difficult angle to make it 2-1 to the Addicks. The 2,297 Addicks in attendance were sent home happy unlike the Nicky Bailey boo boys among the home fans.
