Key players safe from predators

There has been no interest in key Charlton players such as Lloyd Sam, Nicky Bailey and Jonjo Shelvey, confirms Phil Parkinson: Transfers

Fans will be relieved to hear this news which means it looks as if we can face the second part of the season with an intact squad. The transfer market has been subdued and of little help to financially troubled clubs such as 'Pay up Pompey' looking to raise funds from a fire sale.

Elsewhere, Alan Curbishley has indicated that he will not be interested in joining the crazy managerial merry go round at Queen's Park Rangers. Sometimes I wonder if Curbs will ever manage again, but I doubt whether he is on the bread line.

Walsall pitch inspection

This will be at 9.30 a.m. There has been a sharp frost in the Midlands over night, but Walsall will be keen to get the game on after two postponements. No doubt they have their braziers out. I wouldn't mind a postponement in the hope that we get Youga and Richardson back.

If the game does go ahead, with the good Mooney-Burton partnership broken, we could revert to 4-5-1 with Shelvey in the hole.

Last ditch equaliser by Llera keeps undefeated record for 9 man Charlton

As forecast by some bloggers, there is a start for Jonjo Shelvey against Swindon today. Wagstaff drops back to the bench and Spring comes in. Akpo Sodje starts wide right with Shelvey in the hole. Omozusi stays at right back. Dailly who is ill was replaced by Llera without his special headgear. Not our strongest side, but it was good to see Chris Solly on the bench.

An early free kick from 25 yards out deflected off a Swindon player for a corner reports Philippa Nicholson. Sam Sodje got his head to Basey's corner but it went just over. However, Charlton got a second corner, but this time Llera's effort was well off target. Worryingly, Sam Sodje had to have treatment on the pitch and was led to the dressing room with a head injury to receive further attention.

Llera headed the ball away as Swindon advanced and Charlton were awarded a free kick for a foul on Spring. After a good build up, Shelvey turned provider for Burton with a good ball, but the chance was lost when the striker headed over the bar. Sodje returned bandaged up.

Swindon attacked, but Bailey turned the ball out at the expense of a throw in. Bailey put in a good shot from distance but it went just over the bar and into the Jimmy Seed stand.

Llera headed the ball across his own penalty area. Eventually Omozusi was able to clear.

Sam Sodje was sent off on 19 minutes as McGovern went down after a unnecessary two footed challenge where there was no danger. Semedo dropped back into central defence leaving a three man midfield.

Elliot read a Swindon effort well and made a great save to turn the ball over with his fingertips. The corner was taken short which usually doesn't work and the ball was cleared.

Charlton won a corner. Llera failed to make contact. Bailey played the ball back in and following further play Omozusi fed Shelvey, leading to a second corner. Journeyman Matt Lucas in the Swindon goal collected.

Omozusi made a good run. Bailey had a go but it was never really on. Spring fed Basey well, but he lost possession. Omozusi continued to look lively. Akpo Sodje went down after a challenge by Haitian international Jean-Francois Lescenel. Sodje got back to his feet and Jean-Francois Lescenel got away with a quiet word.

The free kick did not how much power behind it and it was easily collected by Lucas, drawing on his early career experience in short-term loan deals. He has now found what may be a permanent home in Wiltshire.

There was a 50-50 between Akpo Sodje and Jean Francois which could have produced a penalty. The players thought that it was a penalty and Deon Burton got a yellow card for making his views known to the referee. Akpo Sodje looked very angry.

Shelvey put in a superb shot, picking his spot well, to put the ten men of Charlton ahead.

Charlton were down to nine men after Akpo Sodje had played the ball forward, Burton fouled Lucas and was shown his second yellow and sent off with five minutes of normal time left. I am having to tell Wyn to change the headlines every few minutes.

Swindon tried to attack, but Elliot collected at close range. Five minutes of time were added on. Elliot read a lofted ball well. Swindon kept up the pressure and they won a corner. It was taken short and it went out of play for a goal kick. Bailey took a free kick too quickly and an opportunity was wasted to keep possession.

Swindon were given a free kick in a very dangerous position after a foul by Bailey. It went over the wall and Elliot saved.

Millwall were losing 1-0 at Norwich.

Half time: Addicks 1, Robins 0

Swindon won an early corner. This time it was not taken short. The referee spoke to Douglas and Shelvey after they competed for the ball.

Semedo challenged well. Omozusi managed to avoid conceding a corner. Swindon kept up the pressure. Charlton turned defence into attack. Good work by Llera saw the ball safely shepherded out. Jean-Francois was taken off and Alan O'Brien came on for the visitors.

A strike from Douglas was deflected by Bailey for a corner. The short corner routine was used, an effort by Douglas was deflected for a second corner. Shelvey evaded two defenders and forced a save on the ground from Lucas.

Semedo managed to clear as danger threatened, but the ball came back in and Swindon got the equaliser from Austin on 56 minutes. It was a relatively soft goal which could have been prevented after some poor defending and Elliot perhaps could have done better. It was unfortunate that Charlton could not have held out longer.

Charlton won a corner, but Bailey's effort led to nothing. Swindon won a corner. Basey connected with Sodje, but he was unable to make good use of the ball. A free kick from Bailey led to a Charlton corner. Llera's header was cleared off the line by Douglas. The crowd of 17,977 were doing their best to get behind the Addicks.

Swindon won another corner. Elliot punched the ball away and Charlton got a free kick. Basey kicked the ball away after the referee failed to give a corner and he received a yellow card. Swindon brought on Celtic loan striker Ben Hutchinson to strengthen their attack.

Swindon threatened, but Charlton were able to block through Bailey. McKenzie came on to replace Akpo Sodje to provide fresh legs. Swindon put in a strike but Elliot saved well.

After Austin played the ball to the far post, Paynter put the ball in the net to make it 1-2. The Swindon fans sang 'Up the football league we go'. Bailey made an error, but Swindon were not able to take advantage as they shot on sight.

Austin came off and was replaced by a midfield player. Omozusi was withdrawn and Scott Wagstaff replaced him, giving Charlton more attacking options. Charlton's outfield was playing 3-4-1. Returning prodigal Chris Dickson replaced Jonjo Shelvey who had become quieter. The formation changed to 3-3-2.

Wagstaff put in a superb cross, but McKenzie was inches away and Swindon were able to clear. Charlton won a free kick after a clear foul on Wagstaff and then a challenge on McKenzie. Basey's ball was headed into the air and a free kick was given to Swindon.

Swindon received their first yellow card when Hutchinson was booked to ironic cheers from the Addickted. Four minutes of time were added on. Swindon just had to retain possession. Charlton won a free kick and Llera scored the equaliser. Often derided as a carthorse, he will be the hero of the hour. Parky went beserk celebrating.

Colchester beat Southend 2-1 at Roots Hall and Norwich defeated the Spanners 2-0 to close the gap to two points. Charton face a tricky match at Brentford on Monday without Burton and Sam Sodje.

Terriers confident of getting all three points

Huddersfield Town are confident of securing all three points at The Valley tomorrow and thus taking what they regard as a 'major scalp'. This view held by a number of teams of the match against Charlton as the equivalent of a cup final doesn't help us at all. However, it is evident that the Terriers are not going to play for the draw, so that should make for a higher quality game than against Oldham: Scalp

Striker Robin Simpson (thigh) and Tom Clarke (knee) are not available, but the Terriers are travelling south with what they regard as a strong squad.

With Semedo hopefully back tomorrow, I would stick with the 4-4-1-1 formation as I don't think we have a viable 4-4-2 to start with. McLeod unsettles the opposition with his pace, but Shelvey unsettles them in other ways and McLeod misses sitters in front of goal. Tuna is a work in progress and McKenize is not fully match fit.

I find this a difficult match to forecast, although some other bloggers have settled on 2-1 which seems reasonable. However, it could be 2-1 in the other direction and I will settle for another draw at 1-1.

What's right with Charlton?

When we were in the Premiership and we beat a top four club such as Liverpool (which we did more than once) the papers would hold an inquest the next day on 'What's gone wrong at [insert name of top four club]?' It was never a case of what is going right at Charlton.

I wondered how the media would deal with the awkward fact that Charlton are (enjoy the moment) top of League 1. Of course, not much space is given to League 1, but the Sunday Times round up yesterday was headed 'The Joy of Leeds' with accompanying text underneath. Further down the page it was acknowledged that 'Charlton also won a fifth straight league game ... adding to the home side's woes.'

To rub it in, Plymouth Argyle stalwart Steve Watt (standing in for supremo Keri Jones who is on the mainland) played Blue Moon on Radio Scilly this morning to celebrate the triumphs of the Massives, but refused to respond to request to play the Red, Red Robin or at least Mull of Kintyre.

The period up to the transfer window is a crucial one for the club with considerable uncertainty still surrounding its future. One has to remember that sometimes a very good offer comes in for a player, the player wants to go and it would be difficult to refuse. I wonder if this explains Shelvey's rather indifferent performances in recent games.

Unfortunately I shall be on a plane to Canada tomorrow and by the time I log in online in Toronto the die will be cast. It also means I will miss the Brentford game next week which will be one of our toughest tests so far. Ironically, a Bee will be with me in Toronto.

West Malling Addick Philippa Nicholson has stepped up to the plate and will provide coverage of the game.

Llera sports Cech style head gear

Vaasa, Finland: Charlton maintained their 100 per cent record in the league with a 2-1 win at the former Brisbane Road over Leyton Orient. The Addicks are 2nd in the table just behind mighty Colchester and ahead of Leeds on goal difference.

Charlton defender Miguel Llera is wearing Peter Cech style head gear to enable him to play in tonight's clash with Orient. Otherwise, the Addicks line-up is unchanged but they are wearing the stylish new away strip which has drawn admiring glances in the JJ sports bar here in beautiful downtown Vaasa (noted for its 'socialist realist' architecture).

Unconfirmed reports suggested that Peter Varney and Alan Curbishey were sitting in the directors' box, but others think they were look alikes. In fact Varney and Curbs were sitting in an away area, the former chief executive accompanied by two famly members. The Rickster has pointed out that there is nothing remarkable about Varney attending a game and sitting with away fans (although Curbs would be a different matter if he was there as he has not had any recent contact with Charlton as far as I know). Peter Varney was asked about the takeover and waved his arms. Should it go ahead, Curbs may become a director.

Orient had much of the early possession. Sam got in a cross on 7 minutes, but Burton's header was wide. Shelvey had a free kick in a promising position on 22 minutes and Burton connected but Jones in the Orient goal made a good save.

Disaster struck when Orient went 1-0 ahead just before the half hour mark. Following the concession of a free kick by Racon, a cross came in and Mkandawire headed into the back of the net.

Semedo put in a cross minutes afterwards, bujt Mkandawire cleared and Sam shot wide from distance on 32 minutes. Both Sam and Shelvey were booked in the first half. Some think that Shelvey was lucky not to be sent off.

Burton had a last minute effort on goal, but Jones saved comfortably.

Half time: Orient 1, Charlton 0

Racon was the latest player to be booked just after the break. Sounds as if they were too up for it.

Jones saved comfortably from Bailey after a Shelvey corner. Elliot saved from an Orient corner.

Just after chucking out time at the JJ sports bar (11 pm Finnish time) Shelvey ended his quiet start to the season when he scored on 64 minutes from a knock on. Just six minutes from time Burton pounced on an error from Mkandawire to make it 2-1.

Those who were there thought there was too much long ball and too many avoidable yellow cards. Nevertheless, we have played two of our first games away and we should be able to beat Walsall on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Saints fans celebrated their good fortune in securing the services of Alan Pardew as their points total stayed at -9.

Leamington beat Evesham United 4-1 in their first home match of the season in front of a crowd of 717 at Harbury Lane. Unusually only one of the goals was apprehended by Sgt. Mark Bellingham, Luke Corbett scoring twice for Brakes.

Jonjo Shelvey

In case anyone hasn't seen this piece in The Guardian: Prodigy

There is a bit of a buzz around The Valley and things are looking good at Leamington as well. They finally recorded a pre-season win with a 3-1 victory over Stratford Town last night at the Anne Hathaway Stadium in front of a crowd of 301. I wasn't able to see them reclaim the Bard of Avon Trophy on a very wet night as I was quite late back from London.

Shelvey turns down Blues

Reports are suggesting that Jonjo Shelvey has turned down a £3.25m move to Chelsea. According to the Sunday Times he thinks (with good reason) that a move there would restrict his development as a player. Apparently, he would prefer to go through the Blackwall Tunnel to West Ham, but the Hammers have no dosh to pay for him.

Shelvey has also been linked with a move to Ipswich, but I find that quite an odd suggestion. Why just move up one division to join the Tractors?

My hope is that he will stay until Christmas.

Also in the Sunday Times charm merchant and Spanner Rod Liddle forecasts that Millwall will take ten or twelve points off Charlton and Leeds United. In your dreams.

Blues in for Shelvey

Chelsea have joined the race for the signature of Jonjo Shelvey. What is particularly attractive about their interest is that they would be prepared to loan him back to Charlton for a season or even two.

However, West Ham and Spurs are also in the face and Shelvey himself is thought to favour a move to White Hart Lane.

Charlton throw away 2-0 lead away again

Charlton's nemesis Jay Bothroyd was prominent in early exchanges at The Valley tonight, writes Philippa Nicholson. Some fifteen minutes in Bailey whipped in the ball from the left, Burton connected and the Cardiff City goalkeeper had to come off his line, possibly incurring an injury. This was really the first serious effort by Charlton who had not looked as if they were at the races. The nominal home attendance was just over 19,300, the lowest of the season, on a mild evening.

The ball was whipped across the front of the Charlton goal, but went wide and out of play for a throw in. Cardiff won another corner to be taken by Parry. Burton tracked back and got the tackle in near the halfway line.

Charlton won a free kick 25 yards out on the left-hand side of the 'D'. Bailey's effort went over the crossbar and into the Jimmy Seed Stand. Lloyd Sam was not very evident in the game, as is so often the case.

Racon tried to combine with Burton, but a Cardiff defender put it over for a corner.
Charlton kept possession, but were forced up the field.

Youga lost possession, Chopra was given all the space in the world but Rob Elliott made a great save at the expense of a corner. Chopra tried another shot which caught Hudson in the face. He went down and the referee blew up immediately. While the game was halted, Parkinson told Sam to get his act together.

Bothroyd had a free kick awarded against him for handball and then said something to the referee which earned him a yellow card for dissent.

An effort by Youga earned Charlton a corner. Heaton punched the ball into the air. Charlton continued to attack and with first class positioning Shelvey put the ball in the net with an assist from Lloyd Sam.

Ledley put in a volleyed shot from 30 yards out and drew a super save from Elliot. A chorus of Valley Floyd Road started up.

A shove on Burton gave Charlton a free kick square to the 'D' some 35 yards out. Charlton won a corner off the free kick, but it was unproductive.

Two minutes of time was added on. Zheng Zhi took the ball off Bothroyd. McCormack dived for a free kick, but was not booked. Some Cardiff players surrounded the referee after the whistle blew to explain that he was not getting the result right and the yellow card was shown to Ledley.

Half time: Addicks 1, Bluebirds 0

Charlton won an early corner, but it was easily collected by Heaton. Butterfield was booked for a challenge. Cardiff received a free kick on the touchline, but Bailey headed it away and then a second time. Charlton broke, but Zheng Zhi's right footed effort hit the post to deny the Chinese captain.

Youga advanced well, but ran out of space. Chopra was taken off by Cardiff and replaced by Burke who is essentially a left midfield player. Bothroyd was allocated more of a striking role.

Zheng Zhi was booked for a tug on Scottish charm merchant McCormack who made the most of it. Burton was taken off and was replaced by Kandol whom Parkinson hopes to keep next season. Kandol is a Charlton fan who used to live the other side of the Blackwall Tunnel.

Charlton were possibly starting to defend too deep. Butterfield blocked twice. Burke was making himself troublesome. Kandol got away as lone ranger, but Comminges was with him and he ran into the advertising holdings.

Cardiff maintained pressure and they got a free kick near the corner flag in front of their own fans in the Jimmy Seed. A Gyepes header went over to the disappointment of the visiting Taffs.

Cardiff won a corner as Spring prepared to come on. McCormack's corner went out of play for a goal kick and the lacklustre Lloyd Sam was pulled off. Shelvey went out on the right with Zheng Zhi in the hole behind Kandol.

Bothroyd felt that he had scored from a long ball but the flag had gone up. The Addickted started a chant of 'England'. Bailey put in a challenge on Burke and received a yellow card from Mr Williamson. Rae went down under a challenge from Spring and Cardiff got a free kick for Bothroyd to display his talents from the right-hand side of the 'D'. McCormack was given the opportunity and it was rubbish.

Cardiff were awarded a free kick against Racon. The ball went through the wall, Elliot pushed it away and Charlton broke and won a corner. Bailey scored the second from Shelvey's corner which the Bluebirds failed to clear.

Cardiff then got a goal back on 81 minutes after Burke ran on to a ball down the middle, having faced no challenge. Shelvey came off to be replaced by Matt Holland. American international Eddie Johnson, on loan from Fulham, came on for the visitors in place of Paul Parry.

Cardiff won a free kick on the touchline. Bailey fouled Roger Johnson on the edge of the 'D', giving the visitors a free kick. The ball from Bothroyd was blocked by the wall and it was cleared. Another free kick was given away to the right hand side of the 'D' by a needless foul. City won a corner taken by Burke and they got an equaliser on 89 minutes through Gyepes. Once again Charlton had blown a 2-0 lead for the second time in four days and large numbers of the Addickted start to leave. Parkinson looked disconsolate.

Three minutes of time were added on. Roger Johnson was taken off and Darren Purse came on. Butterfield conceded a corner which was taken quickly. A shot from McCormack brought down Matt Holland. Kandol tried a shot and Charlton won a last gasp corner.
