I don't give a lot of credence to this, but the Sunday People reported yesterday that Harry Redknapp may step aside at QPR and Chris Powell would be on a short list to replace him. First, QPR may still get promoted in which case Redknapp would probably stay. Second, being on the short list is not the same as getting the job. What I do think is that if Chris Powell was let go at Charlton, he would soon get a managerial job elsewhere.
Of course, following yesterday's defeat there are those who would like to get rid of him. But it is the players who are on the pitch not the manager.

It seemed to be the sort of game where Stevens and Kermorgant would have made a big difference and it isn't Powell's fault that they were not plating.
I've never been in the 'Powell out' camp. There's no doubt he was dealt a shitty hand by the last regime and little has changed under the new regime.
But sometimes his tactics and team selection are the root cause of our troubles on the pitch.
Daggs
its 100% team selection and tactics attack is the best form of defence and we are never set out to attack.
And who is it who puts the players on the pitch, makes the substitutions & chooses the tactics? If Powell is as good as you say why hasn't he been snapped up by a bigger club? Are you saying that Powell bears no responsibility for our plight? What length of contract would you now give him?
I have always been a supporter of Powell but maybe now, it is time to let him go and get someone else in who might be able to save us. Lets be honest here, we might not have a great team, but there are some really good players and
Powell is totally to blame for team selection, tactics and playing players out of position. Cousins was playing surperb until he put him on the wing, where he has stayed, sorry to say but its to accomodate Jackson, who in all honnesty has had a really poor season and apart from the QPR game should have been dropped ages ago. Cousins is not a winger its like playing Harriot at centre back! He did the same to Pritchard, who was playing well in midfield until he put him on the wing and it destroyed his confidence, he can't even get in the squad now and the same thing is happening to Cousins! Powell continues to play Church as his main striker yet all ever does is run around like a headless chicken, can't control or trap a ball and rarely ever gets a shot on target let alone score! Being a defender himself, Powell mostly sets up his team to defend and hope we can snatch a goal first and then defend it, unfortunately Powell has no plan B or C when we go a goal behind, which is the norm! The other alternative, is to get rid of the other two stooges who work alongside him and get someone in who can actually assist Powell in tactics and team selection, otherwise it looks like division one beckons!
Wyn I have followed your blogs for many years from the distant lands of Australia. Last night I had the first chance to watch the boys playing. My Impressions were that CP does not have the cattle at his disposal. The passing was poor we lacked a creative midfielder who can unlock defenses and we lack pace. All in all,a division one team that will go down.Is this CP's fault I don't think so he was aware of frailties at the start of the season but no money meant he had to do the best he could with a poor bunch, then to add insult to injury he finds himself minus his better performing players. He will become the scape goat of a poor situation. Its a pity because I feel that he has true potential if give a full deck of cards.
Thanks for your efforts Aussie Steve.
Fortunately, it's not job to decide what length of contract Chris Powell has. I certainly don't think he is beyond critcism, e.g., delaying substitutions too long. I would also agree that he plays some players out of position and he lacks a Plan B or a Plan C. I know that a common view among fans is that defence is the best form of attack whereas I prefer a counter attacking style of play, but these players may not able to do that - or a continental manager might be able to organise them in that way. In general, I am sceptical about how much difference a change of manager can make (think Fulham) especially if the players are insufficiently good. The squad need strengthening at the beginning of the season, but clearly the departure of Kermorgant and Stephens didn't help.
Wise words from Uncle Wyn - but given how QPR played at the Valley would Chris Powell (whom I like and, given his limited resources, has done well)even want to go to Loftus Road. (Written by a QPR fan still recovering from the trip to the Valley)
What Chris Powell wants to do is to stay at The Valley, but I think under terms where there is not excessive intervention in player recruitment. If QPR fail to go up, it will be tough task for anyone given the prospect of fines and transfer embargoes, although they will be open to challenge in the courts.
However, apart from Kermorgant (and maybe Stevens) his record on player recruitment has not been good).
When given a budget (nop an excessive one), Powell bought an entirely new squad and got promoted from League 1 with over 100 points. The next season he was provided some finances (not excessive by any means) and led the club on a great run to a top half finish. This season he was told to cut the squad, which he did, given no funds, had his best players sold and we're struggling. Do the maths everyone. He's a done a remarkable job at Charlton, nothing less.
I notice the messiah has not been given a job anywhere yet? is he holding on for the Man Utd job when Moyes gets the chop? Or has he been tapped up by Barca?
