nice man a true charlton legend who played anywhere and 110%
What a player and what a good club man! He wasn't afraid of anything. Does anyone else remember his last confrontation at The Valley against an ageing, i.e. old, Stanley Matthews? He just tackled him in the same forthright way that he would any other player. I was convinced at the time that that match confirmed to Sir Stan that retirement was a wise option.
And he played until he was 37. The rock in my original Golden Era - Sam in goal, Hewie and Ufton in defence, Fenton the Enforcer, Charlie Vaughan upfront, soon to be complemented by Firmani and the underrated Stuart Leary. Nowadays we get excited when we have ONE player of this stature.
John was a great all-rounder, he played every position on the field for Charlton including goal keeping. One of the great contingent of South Africans that helped to build the team in the fifties. He played 19 times for Scotland, the most capped Charlton Player, I wish him all the best for the enjoyment he gave to the fans of his day.

One of the greats who made follow Charlton rather than Millwall. Saw him play in goal in a 4-1 defeat at Luton. Real Roy of the Rovers player .
I saw him play so many times and in so many positions. A very enthusiastic and totally committed player, and a significant part of Charlton's history.

One of my boyhood heroes as well, ranked alongside Bartram.
