Villa win 4-1 in Solly testimonial

Aston Villa beat Charlton 4-1 at The Valley this afternoon in front of a crowd of 7,532 for the Chris Solly testimonial. Some 3,000 fans made the journey from the Midlands.

The Addicks started brightly. But the best efforts on goal came from the visitors, with Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane and John McGinn going close. And the team’s Premier League class shone through after 37 minutes, when from a slide-rule pass from Grealish, El Ghazi deftly sidestepped goalkeeper Dillon Phillips to leave an easy finish. Dutch winger El Ghazi, 24, on loan from Lille for last season’s Championship campaign, completed a permanent switch to Villa for £8m over the summer.

Ahmed El Mohamady almost made it two on the stroke of half-time, heading just wide. Andre Green scored for Villa on 55 minutes followed by McGinn two minutes later.

Lyle Taylor pulled one back for Charlton from the penalty spot after he was fouled by former Addick Ezri Konsa, but McGinn added the fourth for the visitors.

Fans are concerned that, without further signings, we have a League One midfield.
