And now it really is all over

Queen's Park Rangers ended Charlton's slim remaining hopes of making the play offs with a 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road this afternoon watched by over 2,000 Addickted. Blackstock scored the winning goal in the 15th minute after he had got past Paddy McCarthy.

Iwelumo had a chance to score in the second half, but put the ball over. Nine shots on target for the Hoops compared with two for the Addicks really sums up the game. Four Addicks were booked, three for dissent (Iwelumo, McCarthy, Varney), the fourth booking being collected by Bougherra.

Promising youngster Scott Wagstaff feature on the bench.

Charlton's performances have simply not been good enough over the season to merit a play off place.

The unworthy 'playoff' performances currently put us 11th. and in the lowest position of last season's relegated teams.

It is going to be a lot tougher next season and unless there is a major re-think, we could well be one of NEXT season's relegated teams - and broke, to boot.

A clear focus from the Board, clear directives to the manager and a season of consolidation and development.

No more pie in the sky -and please, no more management circus acts.

Uh Oh! I guess I spoke too soon. Just got the following quotes from Sky:

"I've a good idea of some flaws in the squad which we did not correct in the last transfer window and we have to correct them in the summer," said Pardew.

"I know the responsibility I have to try to get this team back to the Premiership. We've got one parachute payment to go so it's essential we get it right.

A couple of days ago, he said, "Once we're out of contention I will not hesitate to bring in some of the many fine young players we have at this club.”

I'm confused.

I'm sure this is going to be contentious. Curbishley did the damage, I believe in the last couple of seasons of his tenure. Dowie undoubtedly destroyed us with his transfer policy. But Pardew has had his hands tied I believe he is the man for the job.

I really want to like Pardew, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with his style of management. I believe he puts pressure on players, fans and board with his constant talk of promotion, inconsistent team selection, and finally his use of loan players.

What is blindingly clear is two of those flaws derived from his search for a bit of magic. It didn't arrive and so we don't deserve to go up. I believe if this had been a normal championship season we would have fallen out of the promotion race far earlier and youth would have been given more of a chance.

The biggest problem for me is that Pards always talks up promotion, when he fails, the fans are naturally disappointed. He should only be looking at the 'next game', this seems to be a basic mantra from the majority of professional athletes.

He needs to look at building a young side from the existing squad but only needs to jettison 1 or 2 bits of dead wood. I'm not sure but do we have a decent young creative midfielder? If we do, he needs to be given some games.

I'll add further comments over the off season.

Anon..I disagree when you say that "Curbs did the damage"..It was us ,the fans that did the damage, greedily expecting more than mid-table end of season PL finishes. Curbs did what he could but there was a limit to what he could achieve. Unfortunately many of the Valley "faithful" wanted more... Well now they've got it..

It's been a very disappointing season, but let's get not too gloomy about next season. Hopefully, Pardew and the board will learn from their mistakes and he will weave some of his second season magic - not. Curbs got us to 7th in the Premiership and that is good as it is going to get for Charlton (in another season, that might have got us into the Uefa Cup). As Financial Times asked yesterday, 'what is the point of a team like Bolton Wanderers?' And they have been in the UEFA Cup.

What worries me is; if Pardew makes as much mess of next season, as he has this, where will we end up? I simply don't have belief in his ability to turn our motley mob into a Championship winning team.
Sam Allardyce is still out of management. Maybe he'd tell us to get lost, but we should ask him.

Daggs, whilst I see where you are coming from, I don't think the club can afford the cost of changing managers. There are a few simple things that could be done that would improve our performance, e.g., settled side, fewer loan players just for starters. It isn't rocket science as we learnt with Dowie.

Why is it that even the most uneducated fan can see the problems but our management team with all their badges and certificates cannot. We need a ball playing midfielder one who can hold up or create when required.A centreback or sweeper depending upon the formation chosen and last but not least belief relayed to the squad. How must the morale of individuals have sunk as loan player after loan player arrived at the club.Pards needed to be more forcefull with the board especially when transfer matters were being dictated to him or more honest with the fans.If we are stuffed for cash then say so dont pretend that when you let your most resourcefull player go that all is well with the world.I do become concerned when we are told that he (Pards) knows what is wrong. For christ's sake if you know the solution fix the problem dont build up false hope or offer false dawns.Rant over im off to bed.

Wyn, i was kinda hoping Pards' might offer his resignation, in view of the disaster he's presided over!
