Phillips for Charlton?

Reports are circulating that we tried to sign striker Kevin Phillips before the transfer deadline and may yet take him on loan from Birmingham City where he is currently playing.

I saw "Phillips" and my first thought was "Leighton? Too old".

'Scuse me while I reminisce...

Wyn, seems I owe you an apology for my disparaging remarks about your memory. After delving through Colin Cameron's historical bible I discovered that Charlie Mac did indeed score the equaliser against Newcastle on Dec 1st 2001 at the Valley. Can't think why the cup goal should stay with me and not the league one except that that was the day that Shearer received his matching orders for elbowing Jon Fortune, which of course I can remember.

Might be getting on but he has gotta be better than the donkey Burton

I assume that you haven't been watching CAFC games that closely then John. Burton has done very well in the lone striker role. His holding up of the ball, headers, flick ons etc have been very good. He had a glaring miss on Saturday but he can be forgiven that all things considered.
SKP would be a great addition to the team if we can get him.

"Donkey Burton"??
You're having a laugh, ain'tcha? He's been great so far this season, and considering the abuse he got last season, I've been totally impressed with his attitude and commitment to the cause.
Can I just add how refreshing and enjoyable it was to be in the Covered End on Saturday, surrounded by fans supporting the team, encouraging them, not berating every mis-placed pass or small error.

Burton is a cultured player. He did well enough last season aswell. (Prior to the Norwich game, who last scored a hat trick for us ?)

He works extremley hard, is great at bringing the midfield into the game AND is most importantly that enigma that is a 'Charlton type player' that I for one have been hanckering and missing for far too many seasons now. (Mind the good news is we now have eleven of them)

I have never been a big fan of my namesake. However, as an Addicks fan the idea of him playing for the team is enticing.

From the 'original' Kevin Phillips (not Bong, nor Welsh rugby player, nor American political commentator, nor actor)

A few years ago the thought of Kevin Phillips playing for Charlton could have been a dream come true.
Now? It's difficult to see where he would fit into our team, and i'm afraid he looks to be well past his best.
