Addicks take punt on Fleetwood

Charlton have again put into effect their policy of taking a 'punt' on non-league players by signing striker Stuart Fleetwood who is highly rated by the club. At the worst, it should be possible to make a profit by selling on such strikers, e.g., Chris Dickson is now worth probably ten times the £30,000 paid for him.

Fleetwood, a former Wales U21 international, voted the Blue Square Premier Player of the Season and Golden Boot winner last term, has signed a three-year contract. He scored 36 goals for Forest Green Rovers last season.

Despite their new recruit being a free agent, Charlton will pay Rovers a 'developmental' compensation fee because he is under the age of 24 and that will be decided at a tribunal.

But if Dickson is paid for 2-3 years at say 100k pa, and makes no impact on the first team, then we don't make any money on the whole investment.....

But that assumes there is no value on his on pitch contribution. Also, I don't think he's on 100k a year

Given Pard's track record , its difficult to be positive about this signing . They never get long enough in the team . Izale Macleod looked a decent player to me, played really well against Norwich for the 2 penalties and then really well later in the team against Blackpool , but then hegets dropped straight away and he buys Gray ( who lets be honest is just too slow)
He likes lots of forwards but all it seems to do is confuse him about what is the best pairing. Personally I would go for pace every day , eg Varney & McCleod or Varney & Dickson . Then you bring a big galoot like Iwelumo or Gray on with 20 mins to go if you need to. Heaven knows where Todorov fits in .
I think you can pretty much bet that after an early round exit appearance by Fleetwood in the Carling Cup , that he remains anonymous until he joins Barnet/Gillingham/Crewe on loan in January
plus ca change.........

Even though I agree with NYA that it is not a good policy to sign players to make a few quid on them, if the worst that happens is that we sell them for what we pay plus their wages it means that we can have many 'punts' and maybe one of these players will actually be the real deal.

The favoured starting pairing next season is Gray and Varney

About this time last year we were all laughing at how Pardew was collecting strikers.
He's still doing it, but i ain't laughing.
Todorov, Iwelumo, Varney, Dickson, Gray, Fleetwood, McCleod and M.Bent.
How about collecting a couple of quality midfielders and defenders?

I'm with Daggs and anonymous.

This collection of strikers is what I thought we weren't doing this season.

I'd rather see Izzy and Dickson get more of a run.

Izale McClown just ain't good enough - fact. Too many careless and skittish mistakes show how hard it is to adapt to a higher level. Signing him, and players like Fleetwood may well be prospective punts, but what they really show is just how far our finances have been punted down the river. No pun intended.

Diving for one pen does not make a good performance. McClown was far from good enough and worse still showed little or no inclination to work to make up for his manifold deficiencies (lousy first touch, no awareness, too easily muscled off). He thought he'd "arrived", that 7 figure transfer fee maybe turned his head.
Wyn if Toddy's really fit he's my partner for Varney, unless Gray has lost 10 kilos, gained a yard & a half of pace and learned to look around him for fellows wearing the same shirts.
Let's hope Dickson and Fleetwood turn out to be the finds of the year, cos (Varney excepted) there's not much about the non-scoring mob we've already seen.
