Luke Varney is being signed by Derby on loan:

Varney will thus be returning nearer to his home city of Leicester. He also at one time played for Midland Alliance side Quorn.
I know that many Addicks like him for his pace and commitment. I value skill above everything else and in particular the ability to get the ball in the back of the net, particularly given golden scoring opportunities.
Perhaps he can do it at Derby but then that would raise questions once again about the training regime and the state of morale.

I was really pleased with what I saw about Luke in his first few months with us. Saw it as sign of fast attacking football that I thought would take us into promotion contention last year. The goals against Palace were the highlight of his career with us. I thought he would really kick on after that. And us too.
But the goal misses and deterioration in play just couldn't be ignored.
I also like Chris Iwelumo, but saw his inability to direct forward long balls to his colleagues as a failing, and not the style of football I wanted to see...
Your comment on our training regime and morale is salient. I think Luke, like Chris, is a good player and has suffered because of the Pardew regime. I'd rather we kept him in the reserves and invested more time in him under another regime which would see him (hopefully) flourish again.
But we have to pay for the incoming loans wages bill somehow. Perhaps he'll come back a better player than of late.
What a mess it all is.

There is no good reason for believing that the club faces administration and it wouldn't be in the interest of the board for that to happen.
Has anyone else noticed how all our strikers appear to be capable of scoring goals at other clubs - I'm sure that the answer lies elsewhere than the strikers we have - the midfield and the coaching are my guesses. How many decent set pieces and crosses do we see?
We have always been missing good strong creative midfield players, the few we have had over the years we never keep hold of as they know they are good and in demand and so we make quick money out of them, i belive this has always been the issue with our team.
