Charlton win and stay 3rd after Colchester slip up at Bristol Rovers; Leamington win 2-1; and in an exciting match Coventry Blaze beat second placed Belfast Giants 6-4 to stay top of the Elite League. And I was home in time to see Canada win the ice hockey gold in the Olympics.

I was very happy for the Canadians, who must get a little tired of living the shadow of Uncle Sam sometimes. To concede that equaliser with 24 seconds to go...

While it can be a tad difficult and frustrating, sleeping next to an elephant, Canadians have seldom had to worry about playing second fiddle to the Americans in the quality of our hockey. However, over the past twenty years or so, the Americans have made great progress in developing quality players and are now able to put some excellent teams on the ice. With their greater population, it is just a matter of time (if we are not already there) until we will not be able to simply expect to beat our southern neighbours, although we will always be a force in the game. I think that while all Canadians were thrilled by the winning of the gold medal(as they were by the 13 others), it was as much a sense of relief as anything else. The Americans played with great heart and determination to get themselves back in the game and had it not been for the quick hands of one Sidney Crosby, they just might have taken home the gold. For certain, all viewers were treated to a hugely entertaining game and hockey as it is played at the highest level.
