The secret of success

Seoul: Asked about the secret of his success, Paul Lambert, the manager of newly promoted Norwich City said simply: 'Good players'. And that is what Charlton have lacked in sufficient numbers this season.

In previous close seasons lack of money has meant that we have delayed signing players we wanted to save on their wages. Then we have lost them. Hopefully, we will not be constrained in that way this summer. However, given that the club is probably losing around £6m a year, there will be limits to the money available.

I will be back for the game against Hartlepool on Saturday and hoping against hope for a win to provide a satsifactory conclusion to a dismal season.

We were in 5th with Parky with WORST players.

If you're trying to make yourself feel better then fine, but you can't hide from the fact that Powell is out of his depth.

Let us not forget how the "good players" at Norwich were performing before Lambert went there, nor how you supported sacking our last manager rather than support him and hope he would be allowed to strengthen in January.

For god sake give cp some time! Parky was a good coach but We were 5th and dropping like a stone. But for the most parky had much better players at his disposal. Bailey, Burton, sam, youga to name a few.

the Walsall game pretty much belonged to the players not good enough story for me to be honest, you can look back and say we did not in the past get the best out of players like Varney, Ambrose and a lot more but I cannot see it with the present team I am afraid.

I don't think anyone thinks we have as good a squad as Southampton, Brighton or perhaps even Huddersfield but we should have enough to compete with Peterborough, MK Dons, Bournemouth, Orient, Exeter, Rochdale, Brentford, Carlisle, Colchester - all teams above us now. Under Parky (with the addition of BWP and a couple of loans) surely a top 6 finish would have been secured. We have had relegation form in the Powell era, it is not enough to simply blame the players.

More time? If he had any more time we would have been relegated.

I supported Parkinson for a long time, but eventually it seemed that he no longer had the backing of the majority of the crowd and that in itself became a problem. Very quickly supporters have turned on Powell. The board is not, of course, going to make any hurried decisions. But even if one did change the manager yet again one would have to give him a decent set of players. Most of these are not good enough whatever combination you play, whatever formation, whatever instructions you give them.

RP;If you consistently sell or fail to re sign your best players a club can only go one way as Charlton have done in recent seasons and that is down. I do not blame Parky or CP as we would need a miracle worker to do much with the current crop of players who for the most part simply are not good enough. If the squad is not supplemented with 5 or 6 quality signings then my prediction is the next season could be worse than this

I accept this is a problem, whilst I don't think Powell is the right man to take us forward I would do nothing other than support the team and him at games, the negativity at the valley helps no-one and can go some way in explaining why Parky's team tended to fare better away.

I have to maintain that this team was about good enough for a top 6 finish. We have not got enough points with Powell at the helm, and let us not forget the original hastiness of the change in manager was explicitly in hopes to maintain our promotion challenge this season. I think there is a good chance the board will look again at the coaching staff, they expected better things and whilst to many it would look rash and unfair to sack Powell so soon, a summer with so may out of contract is the perfect time to make a change. If 10 or 20 games into the season and we find ourselves in or near the relegation places "patience" will not seem the virtue it does now.

From what I hear CP will have about ten games. The problem then is that there is no queue of good managers wanting to come to Charlton.

The other problem with giving him 10 games is that he'll have constructed a squad by then which any new manager will be lumbered with - the Dowie factor.

If it's not a crisis the close-season is the time to change managers, had we kept Parky we could still have got Powell now. The rashness of the new board has cost us dearly, now I fear their stubborness will prolong the agony.
