Brakes avoid Pratt fall

Your reporter with Dolly the Sheep

Brakes made hard work of it, but they eventually beat Dunstable Town 2-1 at the New Windmill Ground this afternoon to remain in contention in the BGB Midlands Division. Brakes went down 0-1 after 3 minutes to a header from Stephen Pratt. There was a gaping hole in the Brakes defence and this continued to be a problem throughout the rest of the half. The wind was comparable with Blackpoool last week and the swirling ball caused some problems.

It nearly became 0-2 when a shot came off the crossbar and there was a shout for a penalty for the visitors. I've seen them given. Brakes applied some pressure with three corners in succession. Then on 29 minutes Josh Blake burst through. One on one with the keeper it made it 1-1 with a low shot which was how it remained at half time.

The whistle happy and inept referee gave Dunstable a free kick in the 'D', but Mozza made a great save. At the other end the ball was bundled in but the referee rightly judged that Mozza had been fouled. The lively Jamie Towers burst through but the lino ruled him offside.

The home support gave a chorus of 'You're just a bus stop in London' to keep their spirits up, but it looked as if the winner was not going to come. Josh Blake powered through but Dunstable's excellent keeper Paul Taylor made a great save. Finally, the ball fell to Ben Mackey and he was able to make it 2-1. The referee tried to add as many minutes on as he could and the visiting Blues pressed forward but finally the whistle blew for the three points.

Silver Biscuit to the active and skilled Ryan Parisi who made some great runs down the wing.

When I got home I had an E mail from the sports reporter on Radio Scilly. It's the Fredrick Cup for them tomorrow, but as always it's the same two teams playing. I'm glad we don't have to play Dunstable every week because they certainly made a match of it.
