Charlton win cup match

Washington DC: I have received my second soccer shock since arriving here with the news that Charlton have beaten Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 in the paint drying cup in front of 4,630. And it was that man Racon who got the yellow booted winning goal on 57 minutes.

We put on a strong side with Sodje and Benson starting up front, Abbott coming on as a substitute in the 67th minute. It wasn't too easy for Benson to play a team that knew him so well. We edged possession and had six shots on target against three from the Daggers. If it hadn't been for some excellent saves by the Dagenham keeper, the scoreline could have been more in our favour.

One other plus is that Worner (why do the BBC keep calling him Warner?) made an excellent save in time added on.

I think this competition is a diversion but it is so long since we have won a cup match that it is a welcome relief.

It was pretty good performance against a well organised side that were up for putting one over on the "premiership side". The team looks better than last year. I've been impressed with Lee Martin's skills and work rate. Benson looked lively, and so did Abbot when he came on. Akpo was the only disappointment, too slow and and falling over too easily.

One the back line gel, I think we could have a decent team.

Exeter should be a reasonable test, but one we should be expected to win if we are to be credible automatic promotion contender.
