Chris Powell is new Charlton manager

Chris Powell is to be the new Charlton manager: Sir Chris

Many fans think it is a sentimental decision, but I do not think the new owners are driven by sentiment. It is a risk but, when you look at the alternatives, it is a risk worth taking.

It is being reported that Dean Kiely will be part of the coaching staff.

A true charlton choice. This has made my day. A manager with a point to prove, who won't screw us over and is one of the nicest blokes in the game. I don't think it's sentiment, I think the new owners have listened to the fans and understand what we are all about. Any doubters out there need to think about how they would feel if sir chris was named as manager of another club. Come on you reds!!!!!!

Chris Powell is a charlton legend, i really hope that this "appointment" is not to early in his management career, i would hate to see him fail, but oh boy how I would love him to succeed, having chucked in my season ticket at the start of last season, as i couldn't face another game of parkies inept tactics, I will for one return to the Valley to cheer on Chris Powell's Red and White army.

Some previous Charlton managers who had minimal management experience:

Lawrence, Gritt, Curbishley.

Seed had 2 yrs experience.

Cf Pardew, Parky and Dowie, all had previous experience.

Obviously it has elements of the Newcastle experience with Keegan and Shearer.

I am so happy about this. There's a hell of a lot of work to do, but I think we've got the man we need to do it. Charlton through-and-through.

Will he go back to doing his tunnel emergence trick when we win again. That would be bleedin' marvellous!

Well, its a risk, but I think its one worth taking. Eddie Howe looked like a strong good candidate, but the other names touted for the job seemed to me to be no better than Parkinson.

We don't have Dennis Wise, (we have a Charlton legend, so lets enjoy it) and I hope think the search for a new manager says something good aout the new Board.

I see that there is already some negativity on some forum sites. I'm looking forward to Sir Chris walking out as manager for his first home game. I can't think of anyone who could start with more goodwill from supporters. We just need to stay with through the times when we are 1 nil down at half time or if we don't win by at leats 6 nil every game.

I love him but its a terrible choice , no experience in the toughest league of all
It will be a disaster

Have to agree with the more cautious comments, I thought it was wrong to sack Parky and that with money in January he'd have got us up. Powell is a legend and may make a good manager but it seems a massive gamble for a club that is desperate for immediate promotion. It's true Curbs had no experience when he took over but we weren't half way through a promotion challenge, it just seems that the timing of this move is all wrong. Had we taken Howe or Tisdale I could see the logic of the gamble, could both have been long-term solutions as well as candidates with good knowledge of the league and players to make an immediate impact. Does sir Chris brings us all of this?

I hate to say it but this looks like another mistake. I just don't see how he could have the knowledge at this stage of his managerial career to be successful in this situation. I hope I'm wrong.

If this proves to be correct, I'm both relieved and delighted. Looking at the other names on the bookies list, I was fearing a lower league journeyman manager at best (johnson), a flash in the pan at worst (Scott, Waddock). Chris has the respect of the supporters and the wider football community, and has learned from Curbs and Sven. I'm sure he will bring an older, wiser head to assist; KP, Wilkins? In terms of experience, how much did this months golden boy, Eddie Howe, have before he was given a chance? Ditto any top manager....everyone has to start somewhere and, like it or not, that is often Division 3. At least he is one of our own. I did not approve of Parkys dismissal, but well done to the board for getting the right man in the circumstances.

It actually takes time to draw up a contract and get it signed, I would expect Chris to ask for assurances on a budget for new players. As far as Leicester City is concerned, it's going ahead.
