It wasn't politics, say Charlton

As Iran prepare to report Charlton to Fifa, the club has denied that there was a political motivation behind the shelved friendly with the Iranian national team.

A club spokesman said that despite discussions with the Iranians, there had been no agreement on a match. 'There was never a friendly arranged so to say it had been called off would be incorrect,' the spokesman said.

'We had discussions but they were never concluded. We decided not to play Iran, it was a club decision and certainly nothing to do with politics.'

Clearly Pards has not deployed his sophisticated understanding of Middle Eastern politics. See Pardew, A., Journal of Middle Eastern Politics, forthcoming: 'Solutions to the Iran nuclear crisis: 4-5-1 or 4-5-2'

I don't know. I think going to war with Iraq might give us that 'us against the rest of the world' team spirit we have been lacking. (If you have time take a look at my new blog page for my take on this issue).
