Leeds swoop for ex Brakes ace

It's not only Charlton that are dipping their toes in the non-league pool of talent. Former Leamington striker Avun Jephcott is training with Leeds and will join them on their pre-season tour.

'Avon Calling' was Player of the Year in 2004-5 and top goal scorer in 2005-6. At the beginning of 2007 he moved up the non-league pyramid to join AFC Telford.

What is slightly worrying for Brakes fans is that the club is increasingly looking like a good place to revive a faltering career and once that has happened the player leaves. Jephcott, Ben Mackey and Tom Bates all originally played for Coventry City. Mackey has moved on to Southern Premiership football while Bates joined Rochdale, but has now slipped back into non-league football.

Having lost in the play-off finals last year, Brakes face a tough challenge in a division that includes Bromsgrove Rovers, Chasetown and Nuneaton Town (the reconstituted Nuneaton Borough).
