The Iranian Football Federation is to sue Charlton for compensation after their friendly was called off, apparently on instructions from the British Government. It is likely that the Foreign Office gave some encouragement to the friendly being staged in the first place. The decision to cancel the friendly is reportedly due to the missile test that the Iran government undertook last week.
The deputy head of the Iran Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, said: 'Our contract (with Charlton) had even been confirmed by the English Football Association. We had gone through all the proper administrative channels and were in the process of negotiating television rights to broadcast the match but Charlton have changed their mind.'
'It is regrettable that they (Charlton) have cited the missile test as their reason because FIFA insists that politics do not mix with football.' The Iranian press is headlining Charlton's 'perfidy'.

As I said when news was first released of this impending match, why on earth, with all the possible pre-season opportunities across Europe and beyond, would anybody at Charlton even consider, for one moment, scheduling a mid-summer match in Tehran, Iran? Now, to add insult to injury, the club is going to be in litigation?
The match was never due to be in Teheran,although that was the original report. The Iranians and Charlton were both due to train in Spain and the match was going to take place their. Its a shame neither Zimbabwe or The Sudan are holding a training camp there.
I assume Aldershot Town Council will likely sue as Charlton cancelled their game in Marbella as well.
I am sometimes wonder at the people at the club. This is added to a long list of misjudged affairs. Common sense does not seem to part of the clubs list of skills for some time now. I think it is time for a clear out of all aspects of the administration and running of the club so we can get back to an even keel.
